Green Puppies Born Called ‘Hulk’ Pups, Check Out The Adorable Pictures

A Spanish dog breeder was shocked to see green puppies in the newest litter that her dog, Buttons, gave birth to on June 3.

Aida Vallelado Molina from Laguna de Duero speaks to The Local about the puppies that her father, Manuel Vallelado, affectionately calls “Hulk” pups:

“I couldn’t believe it when I first saw them.”

At first Molina thought the green pups were dirty when the color didn’t rub off. She says:

“I thought the puppies were dirty and tried to clean them, but the color wouldn’t come off.”

The green “Hulk” puppies were born weaker than the others in the litter. Unfortunately, the green female died not long after birth. Although he’s weak, the male is still alive. The pup is starting to lose his pigmentation now.

It’s unclear why the female puppy died, but local veterinarian, Daniel Valverde, is investigating it. He says there are “no other recorded cases of this happening in Spanish scientific literature.”

Valverde is conducting a series of virological and bacteriological tests in search of an answer.

The Local also reports that the green puppies aren’t the first ones born. In England a green Labrador pup was born in 2012 in a litter of eight. He lost the pigmentation about 10 days after his birth. The Daily Mail reported that the coloring was caused from exposure to a substance known as biliverdin and it’s found in the placenta. It mostly occurs to light-colored pups. The owners also believed the pup just needed to be washed off.

According to a new report by the Daily Mail about the Spanish green puppies, Aida Vallelado Molina breeds hunting dogs with her father, Manuel Vallelado. He jokes that his daughter should not make the “Hulk” pups angry.

Back to the 2012 report in the Daily Mail, the article mentions that in 2010 yet another Labrador puppy was born green; this time in Sao Paolo, Brazil. He was named Hulk, too, and born in a litter of nine. The other puppies’ coats were normal colors. Within 10 days the pup lost his green color and matched his golden siblings.

From all three events of green puppies born, the coloring is temporary and they lose it by the time they’re about 10 days of age.
