HTC One M8 Gets A Closely Mimicked Cousin Called ‘E8’, Copying Apple?

HTC has always churned out devices that very clearly fit into the ‘Premium‘ category with a befitting price tag. Hence it came as a surprise when HTC chose to step down and make a device that very closely resembles its flagship offering, the HTC One M8.

HTC recently launched its most premium handset and chose to call it M8. In what could clearly be a marketing decision, the company has just come out with its slightly less spec’d cousin and named it HTC One E8, reported 3G. It is surely interesting to see why the company chose to launch E8, but it’s equally important to understand what separates the E8 from the flagship M8.

HTC One E8 Sports A Polycarbonate Shell

Design & Build: The first and most elementary difference between the M8 and E8 is of course the design and build materials. HTC has never compromised on the design materials for its flagship devices. Hence it was obvious that the M8 got the brushed metal finish. The E8 on the other hand has a polycarbonate back. Although the plastic material is quite tough and feels solidly built, it certainly looks mid-range

The HTC One M8 Has A Hard Anodized Brushed Metal Shell

Both the devices look remarkably similar up front. Though there are minute differences in dimensions, it would be hard to distinguish the two from one another. Still, the difference becomes obvious when one holds the two devices. Owing to the metal construction, the M8 certainly feels heavier.

Processing Power, RAM and OS: Both the devices have exactly the same internals. The M8 as well as the E8 have 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processors and 2GB of RAM. Needless to say HTC has always ensured substantial muscle under the hood of its devices. Both the M8 and E8 run Android 4.4 overlaid with trademark Sense User Interface (UI). Battery too is the same, rated at 2600 mAh.

Hardware and Screen: HTC M8 and E8 support Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. But the M8 is slightly superior as it also has an Infra-Red (IR) blaster. Hence the M8 can also double-duty as a remote control. From the storage perspective, the E8 comes with 16GB onboard, but the M8 buyers are being offered a choice between 16GB or 32GB.

But, in keeping with the tradition of offering cutting edge specifications, both the M8 and E8 support micro SD cards up to 128GB. As far as screen is concerned, both phones have a 5.0 inch 1080 x 1920 Super LCD 3 display with a pixel density of 441 pixels per inch.

The Biggest Difference Between The M8 & E8 Is The Superior Camera On M8 With Additional Sensor

So what’s the difference between the two handsets? In summary, the most glaring difference is the plastic shell of E8, against the metal one for M8, reports Tech Times. But, there is one another major change that puts M8 way ahead of E8 and that’s the camera. The HTC One E8 has a no-frills, standard 13 megapixel camera with a single LED flash while the HTC One M8 has a superior 4 Ultra-Pixel camera. Moreover, HTC M8 has an additional second sensor used to judge depth, along with dual LEDs for better low light performance.
