No more clowning around: Houston Texans nabbed Jadeveon Clowney as their rookie outside linebacker. According to NFL, Clowney signed a four-year contract guaranteeing him $22,272,000, which includes a $14,518,000 signing bonus. That’s enough to make a grown man cry — or maybe laugh all the way to the bank.
Since May 8, Jadeveon Clowney, the first overall pick in the NFL draft, has been training in Houston. As the saying goes, you only have one chance to make a good first impression, and Clowney has that in the bag. Mike Vrabel, Clowney’s coach, is impressed with both Clowney’s natural ability in football and his attitude. Clowney is having to make the transition from his former defensive end position to linebacker.
Vrabel, who is a former linebacker for the New England Patriots and a three-time Super Bowl Champion, tells Post and Courier, “I think his (Clowney’s) attitude, much like all of our guys, their attitude has been great.”
Vrabel continues bragging on Clowney stating, “He’s somebody that we’re excited about because he has the natural ability, but he also has the attitude to want to learn. He (Clowney) doesn’t think he has it all figured out.”
Houston certainly knows how to make a deal too good for Clowney to pass up. Other well-known rookies started out with less than Jadeveon Clowney. For example, the rookie salary for Andrew Luck, quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts was $22,107,998 while Cam Newton, the Carolina Panther quarterback, received $22,025,498. And just last month, NFL’s fourth draft pick, Clemson receiver Sammy Watkins, was guaranteed $19,935,603 with his four year contract.
Although Houston is still seeking a quarterback, they are confident that Jadeveon Clowney will give them the results they need and expect. Football fans will need to stand and take notice of Jadeveon Clowney this fall. Watch for great things! Congratulations, Jadeveon Clowney.
