The New Video Game Releases for the week of June 1 are here, and while millions of gamers are still hacking the city of Chicago in Watch Dogs , there are plenty of smaller experiences this week that are worth a look.

First up in the list of new releases is 1001 Spikes, a platforming game whose goal is to crush you under the weight of its brutality. While the story of the game puts you in control of Aban Hawkins, an explorer who is searching for his missing father as well as treasure, the goal of the game is simple: get to the exit. However, after making it a few inches past the starting point, you will die. And you will die again, over and over in a seemingly never ending gauntlet of masochism.

For gamers who appreciate the soul crushing mechanics of a 2D platformer, there are over 100 stages, 24 unlockable characters, and a myriad of different endings to experience. The digital release will be available for the PlayStation 4, PS Vita, Windows and Mac.

If soul crushing platforming isn’t your thing, Murdered: Soul Suspect from developer Airtight Games and published by Square Enix might be worth a visit.

The player assumes the role of Ronan O’Connor, a detective who finds himself unable to move on into the after-life after being murdered while investigating a lead on a serial killer. The game proper begins with the player standing over their own body, setting the stage for the third-person game.

In an interview with Polygon, creative officer of Airtight Games Matt Brunner said, “We wanted a game that was about the characters. Heavy Rain is not a bad comparison, but it’s also a very different sort of game in terms of mechanics. There are similarities to Heavy Rain , there are similarities to L.A. Noire .”

Rounding out the new video game releases for the week are JRPG Hyperdimension Neptunia and other light hearted games such as PlayStation Vita Pets and Nintendo’s lite social simulator, Tomodachi Life.
