The rumors of a Ronda Rousey Vs. Floyd Mayweather fight have been in the media for so long that most people doubt it will ever happen. Apart from the fact that Rousey and Mayweather aren’t even in the same sport, no commission would likely ever sanction such a match.
But, when asked about it again during a UFC 175 pre-fight press conference, Rousey seemed to giggle like a little girl and was too shy to answer. Apart from a few comments giving props to Mayweather, she wouldn’t speak clearly about an upcoming match-up.
Nevertheless, it is known that Ronda Rousey has fought a man before and that man was light heavyweight UFC fighter Chael Sonnen, who was sitting beside her. Sonnen recounted a story – which began with dinner – when he wanted to ask Rousey about a specific judo move she did.
In his own words Sonnen explained:
In her infinite wisdom, she takes me into an empty room and begins to foot sweep me, which looks like a man and a woman are now in a fight. So the guys come out of the kitchen to break this up and protect her. I’m trying to stop them and say, ‘She’s the world champion. She’s got an Olympic medal. If you guys are here to bail somebody out, I’m the one getting thrown around the ballroom here
Even though Ronda Rousey was full of polite smiles as Sonnen recounted the “fight,” she declined to make any comment. Sonnen continued to joke: “I could have taken her. I just needed to get my footing,” he said.
Onto more serious stuff, Rousey did answer questions about her upcoming match with Alexis Davis, due to take place on July 5: “It’s true, she is the first black belt in jiu-jitsu I’ve ever fought. So we’ll see who’s better on the ground, a black belt in judo or a black belt in jiu-jitsu.”
So, while the Rousey vs. Davis fight is a dead cert, don’t hold your breath for a Ronda Rousey vs. Floyd Mayweather match any time soon,. Get real people, it just ain’t happening.
