Seth Rogen Sounds Off On Marriage In Films

Seth Rogen has been in the industry for over a decade, and through that time he has made some observations about the films that are produced for mass consumption. Breaking out in Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up, these days Rogen is the leading voice in most modern comedies. Being that he’s the voice of a generation of these new comedic films, he has the power to change at least one archetype in comedy.

His latest film Neighbors stars Rogen going up against a frat house consisting of Zac Efron, Dave Franco, and Chris Mintz-Plasse, and features Rogen’s on-screen wife as his partner in crime in different revenge plots.

Rogen’s on-screen wife (played by Rose Byrne) didn’t always have the same amount of screen time as what made the cut in the final version of Neighbors. It was only until after Rogen had a talk with his real life wife Lauren Miller, that he realized women’s roles in comedy were severely lacking and worth exploring in the initial script.

Rogen, who acts as a producer on the film, told Studio 360:

“My wife read the script. She’s a writer. She’s one of the people who was like, ‘This isn’t how it would be. We get along, I want to have fun too…”

The actor continued to explain how Rose Byrne wound up with a role that was much more equal to Rogen’s character instead of just portraying a nagging wife:

“And then as we started talking about it, that actually became the most exciting idea of the movie to us. That we could portray a couple where the wife is just as fun-loving and irresponsible as the guy, and they get along really well. In a comedy, that’s almost non-existent. An actual healthy couple that really likes each other.”

Rogen also spoke about just how happy he is in his own marriage, and how wrong films get portraying marriage on-screen:

“Again, in movies they like to portray marriage like, ‘Oh the wife and husband are always arguing and bickering. For me and my wife…the easiest part of my life is my marriage. Like if everything was as smooth and easy and fun as my relationship with my wife then I would have a much easier time getting through the day. We really get along and we like the same stuff.”

Seth Rogen must be doing something right because the film Neighbors is currently the number one film in the United States.
