Angelina Jolie Says Her Rebellious Side Was ‘Misinterpreted’

Angelina Jolie is making her big acting comeback later on in the month in Disney’s live action film Maleficent. To promote the film Jolie is on the cover of Elle magazine, and as the cover promises, she opened up about many things including her rebellious years.

Before she became one half of the most talked about power couple with Brad Pitt, anyone who mentioned Angelina Jolie’s name automatically thought back to a simpler time when she was hanging on the arm of Billy Bob Thorton and creating hysteria on the red carpet with a bevy of PDAs. Then there was Billy Bob’s vile of blood Jolie wore around her neck as a sign of love for her then husband. There was also a moment that saw Jolie making out with her brother James Haven — maybe it was the 90s?

Either way, that time is a far cry from the 38-year-old actress’ life now. However, when the reporter brought up her so-called rebellious behavior, Jolie had some pretty surprising thoughts about that period in her life.

The actress referred of her 20s as a misinterpretation. Jolie explained that it was, “misinterpreted as [me] wanting to be rebellious.”

Jolie continued to explain her frame of mind back in the 90s:

“In fact it wasn’t a need to be destructive or rebellious — it’s that need to find a full voice, to push open the walls around you. You want to be free. And as you start to feel that you are being corralled into a certain life, you kind of push against it. It may come out very strange, it may be interpreted wrong, but you’re trying to find out who you are.”

During her rise to fame the Academy Award winner said that this was fueled on by her fear of leading, “a life half-lived.”

“I realized that very young — that a life where you don’t live to your full potential, or you don’t experiment, or you’re afraid, or you hesitate, or there are things you know you should do but you just don’t get around to them, is a life that I’d be miserable living, and the only way to feel that I’m on the right path is just to be true to myself, whatever that may be, and that tends to come with stepping out of something that’s maybe safe or traditional.”

Over a decade after she won her Oscar for Girl, Interrupted and it’s clear to see that Jolie has grown up and that fear no longer exists. These days she’s a Special Envoy of UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres, a mother of six children, and a partner to Brad Pitt, who she’s been with since 2005.
