A Dad Is Making His 5-Year-Old Daughter Famous In This Series Of Beautiful ‘Old’ Photos

Bill Gekas is a self-taught Australian photographer and, more importantly, dad to the adorable five-year-old girl in these photos. Gekas has won numerous awards for these photos, as well as his other work, and we think you’ll understand why when you scroll through them.

For his daughter, who is proving to be a natural model, these shots are a fun game of dress-up. For Gekas, they are an ongoing tribute to the great painters of the 18th century, particularly Rembrandt and Johannes Vermeer. He started the project in 2010, intending to create just a few in the series. But he and his daughter so enjoyed the process, that he just kept going.

“Although the photos aren’t recreations of any particular painting,” the self-taught photographer says, “I try to recreate the overall aesthetic the old masters’ works were known for.”

Either way, the photos provide quality time for dad and daughter, who seems to love dressing in styles from the Europe of 200 years ago. And she displays an uncanny ability to recreate the soulful expressions seen on the faces of women in the classic paintings of that era.

Though Gekas has raked in the awards, he hasn’t made any cash from these photos, and he’s fine with that. He says he has received numerous offers to sell prints of these stunning shots, but he says, “I’ve declined and there’s no certainty whether I’ll ever sell any of my personal work in the future either.” He has offered some prints for charity, however.

The first photo in the series recreated Vermeer’s masterpiece, “Girl With A Pearl Earring.”

Every detail, down to the book bindings, conveys the 18th-century time period.

Baskets of fruit were very popular with 18th-century painters.
