Blue Jackets vs Penguins, game two. If the Pens took the Jackets lightly in game one of the opening round, they won’t make the same mistake in tonight’s Penguins vs Blue Jackets game.
The Metro Division champs squeaked by the wildcard Blue Jackets by a score of 4-3, but they didn’t look impressive for one of the NHL’s elite teams facing a team whose playoff position was in question until they hit a hot streak at the end. According to an AP report, the Penguin’s Sidney Crosby – who most conducer a shoe-in for the league’s MVP Award– had this to say about some of the extracurricular activity in the game:
“I think guys go the extra stride or two to finish their hit. The after-the-whistle stuff, you look for it more.”
Sidney Crosby and his line weren’t terribly effective in game one. Crosby finished with an assist and a -2 rating for the game. Look for the league’s leading scorer to ramp up his game in tonight’s Penguins vs Blue Jackets game two.
The Penguins can expect tonight’s game to be even more physical than game one, due to the return of hard hitting Blue Jackets left winger R.J. Umberger from injuries that have kept him sidelined. Umberger had this to say coming into tonight’s matchup:
“In a playoff series you’ve got to do that, you’ve got to target their better players and make it uncomfortable for them. You’re going out there running around trying to kill them, but you’ve got to make it uncomfortable.”
Translation: Watch your back, Sid, because R.J. will have you in his sights every time the two of you share a patch of ice.
The Blue Jackets find themselves down a game and facing the fact that Marc-Andre Fleury isn’t going to give up three or more goals every night. Columbus will have to show everyone the kind of play in this Blue Jackets vs Penguins series that they showed down the stretch to make their way into the franchise’s second-even Stanley Cup Playoffs. Hopefully for Columbus, the return of Umberger and fellow left winger Nick Foligno can spark some offense while hitting hard and keeping the Pittsburgh Penguins on their toes.
