ScHoolboy Q Says Interscope Wanted Three Singles On ‘Oxymoron’

ScHoolboy Q understands that working with a major labels means that you’re going to have to make sacrifices at some point along the way.

The West Coast rapper’s highly-anticipated third album Oxymoron is finally available in stores, a record that finds ScHoolboy Q working with a major label for the very first time. Since the folks at Interscope ultimately call the shots, this means he had to make a few compromises when it came to releasing the songs.

During his chat with the folks at Grantland, the rapper revealed that he had to please label executives before they would consider releasing Oxymoron. This means the record had to contain a few more radio-friendly tunes that ScHoolboy Q had originally anticipated. However, he seems to understand this is what happens when you do business with Interscope.

“I mean, I still wrote the songs, so of course I still like them. But this is what I signed up for. Major artists don’t just sign a deal to keep doing independent shit. [Maybe] I thought I was just gonna be able to slip through the cracks. It didn’t work like that,” the rapper explained.

However, ScHoolboy Q told Myspace that he’s still a little nervous about what people will think about Oxymoron. Although he’s confident that he put together an incredibly strong record, the stress associated with the album’s release tends to mess with his from time to time.

The rapper explained:

“I’ll just be nervous about shit. Not nervous, I just be all, what if? in the back of my mind, of everything I do. I know I made a good album, I know it’s crazy. But what if, you know what I’m saying? Timing could be wrong, what if? People think it’s too aggressive or what if? People may think it’s too industry, too mainstream. What if it sells horribly? ‘Oxymoron’ is still what if in the back of my head.”

One person who seems pretty impressed with ScHoolboy Q’s effort is Kendrick Lamar. The Inquisitr previously reported that Lamar called in during his friend’s recent interview with the folks at Power 106.

“We don’t get too many albums out on this side of town, so when you got a crazy album like Q and the fact that it’s from over here. You gotta respect it from everywhere,” Kendrick said.

He continued, “Thinking back to when we were all in the studio, planning these strategies out, starving together and really waiting for the day to come, for my album to drop, for his album to drop. Now it came and it’s like n****s really, really put in the work and dedication, so I’m proud from the jump.”
