Gears of War Movie In “Development Hell”

You’d be forgiven if you completely forgot that a Gears of War movie was in the works. After all, we’ve heard practically nothing of it since New Line picked it up back in 2007. Well, it looks like we’ll be waiting even longer before any new info comes out, if it does at all.

In an interview with GameFront at E3 this year, Cliffy B confirmed that the movie is currently in development hell.

“Who knows what’ll happen”, he adds. “It took however many years for Peter Jackson to make Lord of the Rings. Hollywood is a complicated beast. There’s all sorts of weirdness going on with who’s working on it, what’s going on here and there. But, hopefully it happens. Maybe the Gears 3 success will generate more interest in it. I’d love to see it. I’d rather have a movie that’s great and true to the franchise, than a movie that sucks. I’d rather not have a movie, than a movie that sucks.”

When the Gears of War movie was confirmed back in 2007, the budget was reportedly somewhere over $100 million. A report from LA Times last year stated that New Line Cinema had cut the budget and scaled the scope of the storyline back appropriately.

While this news doesn’t rule out the possibility it will come out eventually, things aren’t looking good for the big screen adaptation.
