‘Big Bang Theory’ Drama Pilot Coming To CBS

Can’t get enough of CBS’ Big Bang Theory? Well, you may be in store for something that’s very similar to watching Sheldon Cooper and his gang of geniuses, sort of. CBS’ Big Bang Theory is so loved that the network has decided to take a chance on a new series that sounds somewhat similar to the hit sitcom.

Instead of greenlighting another sitcom that’s similar to Big Bang Theory, the show is said to be a dramatized version. Titled Scorpion from the minds of Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek, Sleepy Hallow), this show will center around a group of eccentric geniuses as the group solves the world’s largest problems while combating modern threats. It sounds pretty vague, but it almost sounds like Big Bang Theory meets NBC’s ill-fated Heroes.

Interestingly enough, the Big Bang Theory drama is said to be loosely based on Walter O’Brien’s life, who will act as a producer on the show along with Heather Kadin, Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun, and Danny Rose.

According to Deadline, O’Brien “had the fourth-highest documented IQ and recruited the world’s greatest intellects to his company where they not only solved the world’s most pressing and significant problems, but also helped each other learn to fit in and live.”

If that isn’t a good hook, we don’t know what is. Also, consider the other talent pulled in to make sure the pilot is a success. The director of the pilot is Fast & Furious 6‘s Justin Lin, who by now is very familiar with grounding reality with high conceptual action will make his return to television. In addition, the head writer is Prison Break’s Nick Santora.

The fact that CBS would want to focus on a show that’s similar to Big Bang Theory isn’t surprising. The show is pulling in the big numbers as far as their audience goes. Just a few days ago, Big Bang Theory killed their competition, NBC’s Community, and raked in 18.9 million viewers with a 5.1 rating among adults 18-49. In addition to that, the CBS comedy has picked up numerous Emmy nominations and wins.

Creator Chuck Lorre said of the critical praise the show receives:

“You never imagine that you can reach that many people who care about the show so deeply. We all feel as a group we’re doing our best work now; we’ve grown up and the show has matured, and we’re doing a much better job of putting on the show every week.”

Although Chuck Lorre isn’t involved in the new CBS drama, odds are the same people that recognized greatness in Big Bang Theory have found something similar in the new pilot.
