Savannah Guthrie ‘Felt Bad’ During Kate Gosselin’s Awkward Interview

On January 23 the eldest Gosselin children sat down for an interview at the Today show, but instead of talking to co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, things quickly went awry.

Recently Guthrie stopped by Andy Cohen’s Bravo show Watch What Happens Live! and discussion of the awkward interview came up. During her appearance on the show Guthrie said that she “felt bad” while conducting her interview with Kate Gosselin and her twins. The twins, who were known to be the “hammy kids” on their TLC reality show Kate Plus 8, decided to take a vow of silence,which made for a problematic and awkward interview.

Guthrie also admitted that like the rest of the world she was, “really surprised” by the response or lack thereof from the twins.

During the interview Mady and Cara remained silent while live on television and refused to answer Guthrie’s question when she asked, “Mady, what would you want to say about how you and your sister and your family are doing?” What might have been worse is while the twins kept mum, their mother Kate Gosselin reprimanded them and came off as demanding, having said: “Mady, your words — It’s your chance, spit it out.”

“They came on, and I thought the girls had something on their minds — they wanted to get it off their chests.”

Guthrie continued to explain her feelings on the awkward interview, seeming to take a diplomatic approach:

“I was really sympathetic to them. It’s not easy to get on national television — this isn’t something they do every day, live every morning. They’re 13-year-old girls. I felt bad for them.”

Perhaps in this case the visual said more than what words could have. Although Gosselin said the appearance was no different from speaking with a magazine, it was obviously an opportunity to denounce her ex-husband’s claims.

In the past Jon Gosselin has said that the children are in fear of Kate because of how she rules their life as public figures. He has claimed that they are touted around for appearances and different media related deals. Kate eventually fired back and alluded that Jon was trying to ruin her image. Of the accusation, Jon Gosselin told a Philadelphia magazine:

“Everyone thinks I’m out to get Kate. I don’t give a f–k! What would I get out of it? Everyone knows she’s an a–hole. I don’t have to — she’s proven that!”

Both Kate and Jon who were happily married during their first reality series Jon & Kate Plus 8 have gone through a very nasty divorce. The two officially called it quits in December of 2009 after the pair were married for nine years.

For Savannah Guthrie it seems like unlike the rest of the world the awkward interview didn’t change the way she feels about the famous matriarch. At the end of the day, Guthrie said:

“I guess I always give people the benefit of the doubt. Unless they’re politicians.”
