Tamara Ecclestone, daughter of the famous Bernie Ecclestone, just lost a fierce custody battle with her ex-boyfriend Omar Khyami. But the battle wasn’t the usual one over children – it was over a car!
So when is a car more than just a car? When it’s a stunning Lamborghini Aventador which cost over $600,000! Yes indeed, as is often the way in break-ups, when one partner gives an expensive gift to the other when things are good, they may want it back when it’s time to split.
But Mr Justice Dingemans ruled that it was unfair of Tamara Ecclestone to claim the car back, as she had given it as a 38th birthday gift to her boyfriend in 2012. In fact, Mr Khyami ended up selling the birthday gift to pay the outstanding balance he had owed on a Bentley he had bought for Tamara Ecclestone.
In his summing up of the case the judge said what everybody was thinking; namely that the car had: “caused everyone far more trouble than it is worth.” Never a truer word said. In fact, the Lamborghini was seized by bailiffs, who were seeking to recoup the outstanding debt that Mr. Khyami owed.
Tamara changed her story during the hearing, and said that she had bought the car for her boyfriend for use while the couple were together. She never intended for it to be regarded as an unconditional gift.
A spokesman for Tamara Ecclestone said he agreed with the judge that the car was nothing but trouble: “The judge was correct when he said the car had been more trouble than its worth and this has been a difficult time for Tamara and her family. Tamara thanks everyone for their support and it is now time to focus on the future and positive times ahead,” he said.
In his summing up the judge said: “Ms Ecclestone‘s conduct was wrongful and interfered with the title and possession by Elite and Ansol by interfering with sales made by Elite and Ansol, and by removing the car, and by preventing dealings with the proceeds of the sale of the car.”
