Kristen Wiig Wants To Turn Her Focus To Directing In 2014

Kristen Wiig is known for her spot-on comedic delivery on screen, but the actress said in 2014 she wants to shift her focus behind the camera.

Kristen has already made her mark as an actress — first through Saturday Night Live and then in a series of hit movies including Bridesmaids, which she also wrote — but said the time has come to explore her directing skills.

“That’s what I’d like to start focusing on later this year,” Wiig told Moviefone. “Maybe something someone else has written. Maybe something I have written. I’m not sure. I’m starting to look at stuff now. But that’s been an ambition for a long time.”

Kristen Wiig said she’s not sure what kind of movie she wants to tackle for her directorial debut, but said it likely won’t be a blockbuster.

“It’s just going to have to be the right material,” she said. “It being my first thing, it’ll probably be something smaller. I’m not going to be directing the next Hunger Games. I don’t think they’re going to come to me!”

Wiig isn’t leaving acting behind entirely. She currently has four projects in various stages of production, and appears in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, released on Christmas Day.

Kristen said she was pulled into the Walter Mitty project after an encounter with Ben Stiller when he hosted Saturday Night Live.

‘He brought up that he wanted to talk to me about a project,” Kristen said. “So he sent over a script, and it was written by Steve Conrad, who I think is a genius. I’ve been a fan of his for a long time. I loved the script. And I met with Ben shortly after and he talked about the character and what he thought the movie would be and what the feel of it was and the tone of it. We talked about other cast he was thinking of and even the music. It just sounded amazing and like the kind of movie I would want to go see.”

Kristen Wiig also has a role in Anchorman 2 and a voice acting role in the upcoming How To Train Your Dragon 2, but there’s at least one project she won’t revisit. Earlier this year Kristen said she turned down a chance to write and star in Bridesmaids 2, saying the movie was never intended it to become a series.
