‘Rosemary’s Baby’ To Be Adapted As TV Series
Rosemary’s Baby will be adapted as a TV series after getting the green light from NBC.
The network announced that it would be bringing Ira Levin’s 1967 bestselling horror novel to the small screen in July. The Rosemary’s Baby series will consist of four hour-long episodes.
Filming is scheduled to begin in Paris in January, but no casting details have been announced so far. James Wong (American Horror Story) and Scott Abbott (Introducing Dorothy Dandridge) will write the series, with Oscar and Emmy nominee Agniezka Holland (Europa, Europa) directing. Joshua Maurer, Alix Witlin, and David Stern will serve as executive producers.
“As we move into the event movie and miniseries space, Rosemary’s Baby represents the kind of attention-getting, surprising project that will make noise for us,” NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke said of the adaptation. “The story has been updated and moved to Paris, but it’s faithful to the spirit of Ira Levin’s classic novel. This is a compelling tale wonderfully told.”
Both the novel and 1968 film adaptation of Rosemary’s Baby tell the story of Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse, a young couple who move into the Bramford, an antiquated New York City apartment building. After Rosemary (Mia Farrow in the film) gets pregnant, she believes everyone around her, including Guy (John Cassavetes), has evil intentions for the baby.
Roman Polanski directed the film, for which Ruth Gordon, who played the Woodhouses’ neighbor Minnie Castevet, won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress.
NBC is also planning an adaptation of Stephen King’s 1987 novel The Tommyknockers, which focuses on the residents of a Maine town who fall under the influence of a mysterious object buried in the woods. The network is also planning a sequel to The Bible miniseries call AD: After the Bible. The announcement follows a similar order from CBS for a four-hour miniseries, The Dovekeepers, based on Alice Hoffman’s 2011 novel.
