Katy Perry will be kicking things off at this year's American Music Awards at 8 p.m. EST. The controversial but much loved Miley Cyrus will end the night's proceedings and there will be a steady flow of the biggest performers in between.

Perry said she thinks awards shows are fun but she has a lot of special love for the American Music Awards. she said:

I appreciate all the other awards shows for what they are. Some are just kind of shock jock shows. Some are just like, 'Hey, let's see how many celebrities we can get together.' Some are actually legitimate like the Grammys, and the AMAs is a very legitimate show with musicality to it.

So who will steal the show at this year's AMA's? Well, that's anyone's guess with so much talent on stage. The last time we saw something spectacular from Katy Perry she was floating above the stage at the MTV European Music Awards.

For her part Miley Cyrus was recently spotted in Amsterdam smoking a joint in a bizarre performance on stage which even topped her recent 'twerking,' also at the MTV awards, for which she has become notorious.

It seems that these days performers are more interested in shocking the crowds and fans who come to watch them and less focused on actually performing.

2013 has also been a year full of rivalry among celebrities and performers alike who have taken increasingly to social media platforms such as Twitter to feud with each other.

Either way you cut it, this year's American Music Awards promise to be a spectacle with that amount of raw talent at the event. Katy Perry and others promise to make the awards a night to remember.
