Washington Nationals Hiring Matt Williams As Next Manager

The Washington Nationals are edging close to a deal that would bring Matt Williams to the franchise as the teams next manager.

Williams would step in to replace the retired Davey Johnson.

According to several reports, unnamed sources claim that the Nationals will make the announcement immediately following the end of the World Series. Under MLB rules teams can not make major announcements of any kind during the national championships.

Matt Williams enjoyed a long career in the MLB playing with the San Francisco Giants, Cleveland Indians and Arizona Diamondbacks. During his time in The Bigs he racked up six All-Star appearances at third base. Williams has spent the last four years serving in various coaching roles for the Arizona Diamondbacks. In 1994 Williams was the leagues MVP runner-up.

Williams also served as Diamondbacks‘ team broadcaster for five years before moving over to the first-base coach position in 2009.

Former coach Davey Johnson announced before the start of the 2013 MLB season that it would be his last. Johnson had managed the Washington Nationals since June 2011 when Jim Riggleman resigned. Before that time Davey sat in the Nationals’ front office since 2006. Williams might not have big league head managing experience but it looks like that is about to change.

Coaching announcements will arrive in the near future and sources say the Nationals are excited to be one of the first teams to make a big movie when the World Series ends.

Do you think Matt Williams is a smart choice to take over as manager of the Washington Nationals?
