Oregon Ducks To Wear Pink Helmets Against Washington State

The Oregon Ducks will be wearing pink this weekend.

Nike unveiled the new uniforms this morning. The University of Oregon will wear pink helmets, cleats, socks, and gloves as they face Washington State on Saturday.

The pink color scheme, of course, is to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

ESPN reports that the Oregon Ducks have worn pink in the past during the month of October but this is the first time that the team will wear pink helmets. Nike will be auctioning off the helmets after the game to raise money for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

Oregon coach Mark Helfrich said in a statement:

“Cancer has touched so many lives and hopefully, together with Nike and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, we can help create awareness and help raise money for the fight against women’s cancers… It is an honor to join coach Yow’s team in a fight that unites us all.”

In order to entice more bidders, some Oregon Ducks, like Ahmad Rashad and Nike’s Phil Knight, will sign the helmets. Sports Illustrated notes that 100% of the proceeds will be going to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

Seeing pink on the football field has become a normal sight during the month of October but some people are upset with the NFL over their charitable display. A recent report showed that the pink merchandise doesn’t bring in too much money for cancer research.
