Swiss To Vote On Minimum $2800 Monthly Salary For All Adults

Officials in Switzerland are preparing to vote on a bill that would guarantee a monthly salary of $2800 to all adult-aged male citizens in the country.

The minimum monthly proposal gained momentum when Swiss citizens gained enough signatures to force a referendum for the proposal.

The referendum was thought up to counteract the growing inequality of wealth throughout Europe. A grassroots committee forced the referendum by arguing that minimum monthly income would keep the economy humming along.

Money to fuel the $2800 per month minimum would come from the country’s social insurance system. That same system already provides universal health care. The population of Switzerland is just over that of New York City which means a lot of people could be receiving $2800 paychecks.

More than likely if any type of plan went through checks and balances would be put in place to make sure each citizen was only receiving the amount needed to offset their current wages.

Officials in Switzerland have already worked endlessly to make sure executives can’t make hundreds of times more than their workers. In November Swiss officials will vote on the 1:12 initiative which caps executive pay at 12 times that of the company’s lowest paid employee.

The $2800 minimum monthly income referendum does not have a vote date at this time.

How feasible the plan will be is yet to be determined, however, the Swiss have made their social healthcare plan work for everyone in the country.

Do you think guaranteeing a certain price floor for all workers is a smart decision for the Swiss economy?
