Liz Cheney Running For Senate Against Wyoming GOP Sen. Mike Enzi


Liz Cheney has announced her bid for the Wyoming Senate seat currently occupied by Republican Mike Enzi. Cheney, the eldest daughter of former US Vice President Dick Cheney, will challenge the three-term incumbent in the 2014 Republican primary.

Cheney used a six-minute internet video to announce her candidacy on Tuesday, laying out a conservative agenda in the process. She also called the government too large and a waste of taxpayer dollars.

The GOP Senate-hopeful also attacked US President Barack Obama, saying:

“President Obama has launched a war on our Second Amendment rights, he’s launched a war on our religious freedom, he’s used the IRS to launch a war on our freedom of speech and he’s used the EPA to launch a war on Wyoming’s ranchers, our farmers and our energy industry.”

Liz Cheney didn’t mention Enzi by name in her Senate candidacy announcement. However, she stated that she was running partially “because I believe it is necessary for a new generation of leaders to step up to the plate.”

Enzi also didn’t comment directly on Cheney’s announcement. However, he stated that he intends to run for re-election in 2014. His office released a statement, saying, “When I announce formally, I will let everyone know that date in the future. In the meantime, I will do the job I was already elected to do.”

Enzi also revealed that he wasn’t told of Liz Cheney’s announcement by her or her father, whom Enzi has known for more than 30 years. He commented, “I thought we were friends.”

Rumors of Cheney’s potential candidacy circled ever since she moved to Jackson Hole, Wyoming last fall and became a regular attended at state political and civic events. She was a senior State Department officials in President George W. Bush’s administration.
