Woman Gored During Running Of The Bulls

A woman was gored during Spain’s Running of the Bulls this weekend.

According to Fox News, the 23-year-old Australian woman identified only as J.E., was seriously injured by a bull during the annual event in Spain. The woman was reportedly gored by a large Miura bull as she clung to one of the wooden barriers outside of the bullring.

Miura bulls are the largest fighting bulls in Spain and can weigh up to 1500 pounds.

The woman suffered broken ribs, a damaged lung, and is now in “very grave” condition at a hospital.

The Running Of The Bulls sees several injuries every year (four other people were injured this year) but it is very rare to see a woman injured during the annual event. Javier Solano, who works for the national broadcaster TVE, said that J.E. is only the third woman to be gored during the event in recent history.

NBC notes that the San Fermin bull run has seen 14 deaths since it came under state regulation in 1867. The last person to die was a 27-year-old man from Spain who was gored in 2009.

The Running of the Bulls came under state regulation in 1867, but the festival can be dated back until the 13th century. The San Fermin bull run has occurred nearly every singl year since 1592.

The event was popularized in 1926 by Ernest Hemingway in the novel The Sun Also Rises.
