A baby who was dumped in a drain in Spain was miraculously found alive Saturday morning.
The newborn was reportedly in the drain for more than 40 hours and was rescued after a neighbor heard mewing sounds. Police arrested his 26-year-old mother who was in the hospital, claiming she had a miscarriage on Friday. The woman later admitted that she tried to get rid of the baby but didn’t have enough money to pay for an abortion.
She is being held in jail for suspicion of attempted murder. Investigators are also looking into whether she acted alone or had help.
The tiny 4-pound boy is only a few days old and was taken to the city’s general hospital for treatment of injuries including a broken arm.
This newborn wasn’t the only baby who has been dumped this month. Earlier this month, a 22-year-old Arkansas woman dumped her 9-month-old baby in the garbage.
The baby was rescued by his grandmother and luckily unharmed. Brittany Cole claimed that she was tired and no longer able to take care of the baby.
Cole was arrested and charged with felony child endangerment. Prosecutors said that they are considering upgrading the charge to attempted murder.
“We go back to the grandparent being there,” Major Lafayette Woods Jr. with Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said. “Had she not, the child would have been there longer and possibly suffered a death because of it.”
In May, a baby was rescued from a sewage pipe under squat toilet in China. After neighbors heard cries, firefighters launched a two hour rescue mission. The baby had some cuts on his face and limbs. The police are treating the incident as a homicide and trying to locate the mother.
What do you think should happen to the 26-year-old mother who allegedly dumped her baby in a drain?
