Grandmother Accused Of Letting 10-Year-Old Drive

Stories about a 10-year-old driver have shocked news readers.

A grandmother has been charged for letting her 10-year-old grandson drive because she was too intoxicated.

At least this grandmother isn’t in the spotlight for shooting her grandson, unlike the case of Sandra Layne.

Brenda Byrd, 54, realized she was over the limit and decided to avoid driving home; however, it didn’t stop her from instructing her grandson to get behind the wheel.

The very fact that Byrd’s grandson was driving is what alerted people to the fact that something was wrong.

According to reports, the car was swerving in and out of the roadway while driving toward 32nd Street.

Officers in Kenner, Louisiana, were called out when witnesses noticed how erratically the car was driving.

Needless to say, the police were shocked when they discovered the 10-year-old driver behind the wheel.

Luckily for the young boy, the police were more understanding than the officers who charged a man for DUI when he wasn’t.

Sgt. Brian McGregor, a police spokesperson, stated that officers asked Byrd why her grandson was driving:

“Officers asked the women why the younger boy was driving. Byrd and Joiner said they told him to drive because they were too intoxicated.”

What makes this case even more unusual is that, despite her other grandson, aged 15, being in the car, she chose to select the youngest of the pair to drive.

Neither minor should be allowed to drive, but why Byrd selected her youngest grandson has left officers even more confused.

Despite her justification for the unusual choice in driver, the police have booked Byrd.

Byrd’s friend, Shelia Joiner, 48, who was in the vehicle at the time, has also been charged with contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile and allowing an unlicensed driver to operate a motor vehicle.

As expected, Byrd’s grandchildren were taken into protective custody after the incident.

No doubt the unsuspecting 10-year-old driver won’t be getting into the driver’s seat again any time soon.
