Birth After Half Marathon Surprises Runner…Husband Had Vasectomy?

A birth in a half marathon training session surprised the runner mother, but the father was probably more surprised since he’d previously had a vasectomy.

Sunday was the day the world first heard about the birth during a half marathon.

33-year-old Trish Staine and her family, which already consists of two children, were participating in a half-marathon training session for two hours when she began to experience some “post-jog stiffness” while returning to home. Trish tried pain relievers and a warm bath but the pain kept increasing:

“I had a sore back Sunday evening. I had taken a hot shower and was dealing with it. Monday morning, I woke up and had more back pain, and as the day went on it got worse. I thought I should go to the ER. I thought I ruptured a disc or pulled a muscle.”

So Trish went to the Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center fearing a pinched nerve, a kidney stone, or burst appendix. Instead, she had a birth after the half marathon, which she considered “impossible.” Even though Trish was “done having kids” the marathon runner gave brith to daughter weighing 6 pounds, 6 ounces, and 18.9 inches long. The marathon baby is named Mira, short for miracle.

But the father, John Staine, was probably more surprised by the birth after the half marathon considering he had a vasectomy:

“Whose baby is that? It’s not possible. She didn’t gain any weight. Her face was even thinner.”
