Twitter Down! Twitter Suffers Major Outage

The fail whale is back today with popular microblogging service Twitter suffering a major outage.

Twitter went down at approximately 2:10pm PST (9:10am AEDT,) with both the Twitter.com site, and the API (so all third part services) dropping offline.

At the time of writing there is no word from Twitter on the problem, or when it might be resolved.

Initially users received the “over capacity message,” but as we were writing this post, Twitter.com went down completely, suggesting perhaps a denial of service attack or similar.

Update: Twitter status blog notes

High rate of site errors and general slowness 3 minutes ago
Starting a couple minutes ago twitter.com started returning a high number of errors. We are actively working on this problem.

On this end, we’re now getting 503 error messages. Not a good sign

Update 2: 2:35pm PDT (9:35 EDT) Twitter API up and down. Site itself is now loading but slow to load.

Update 3: 3pm PST, 10am AEDT: seems to be back again
