Twitter, streaming video tells story of massive Dupont Circle snowball fight

With hashtags like #snowpocalypse, #snOMG and #snowmaggedon, Twitter and Facebook were used to organize a massive snowball fight in D.C. today.

The nation’s capital, experiencing a snowfall that might break records, has mostly ground to a screeching halt, with many roads impassable and a layer of ice underneath the snow causing additional headaches. But that didn’t stop the massive group from convening in the winter weather, and the Dupont Hotel even set up an outdoor bar for snow warriors. The snowball fight was planned after organizers were disappointed in the turnout for the last D.C. snowball fight in December, which made headlines nationally when video circulated of a detective brandishing a gun near participants.

If you’re not in the area or snowphobic, you can watch the melee live here or here. From the group’s Facebook page, details, times and locations for the snowball fight:

I hope you are all getting excited about Saturday’s snowball fight – I know we are!

Here’s our proposal to inject some team spirit into Saturday’s fight: two factions will gather at the northern and southern ends of the Circle, preparing their ammo until the call is sounded for a charge at the opposing side (kind of like what we did @ 14th & U Street on Dec. 19, minus the cars driving through the middle of the firing range).

Whichever faction you join, Dupont North or Dupont South, is quite simply up to you. But choose carefully! Also – please keep the action INSIDE the park!

After the snowball fight, we hope to head over to One Lounge (1606 20th St, 20th off Q St) for an after-party, with offerings of spiked cider & Irish coffee.

Update: Footage emerged on Twitter of a newscaster being pelted while trying to report on the snowball fight. Epic!
