Whatever Jason Statham’s ‘Hummingbird’ Is, It Looks Amazing [Trailer]

Jason Statham has a movie called Hummingbird coming out soon, and it’s really a shame it’s not getting a whole lot of attention online right now. From the trailer, the British crime/action/drama/everything film looks simply amazing.

Here’s the synopsis for Hummingbird, via Movie Insider:

“A damaged ex-special forces soldier trapped in London’s criminal underworld is transformed into an avenging angel when an unexpected opportunity allows him to assume another identity. Once believing he was beyond redemption, he now seeks out his own version of justice.”

The trailer makes Hummingbird look a lot more complex. You start off with probably the most down-and-out, dirty, stringy-mullet looking Jason Statham I’ve ever had the misfortune to lay eyes upon. From the storyline presented in the trailer, he gets the crap kicked out of him, which inspires him to put his life back together by becoming a dishwasher at his local grubbery.

He realizes that making minimum wage washing dishes isn’t “the life,” and seemingly accepts a job with some kind of Asian mob. From there, he cleans up and dons some sharp suits, and is apparently some kind of mob enforcer. Not a hitman, just a guy who harasses pregnant women for money.

Then someone he knows is killed and he turns on the mob, and it all stays pretty formulaic from there, BUT …

… the film looks absolutely gorgeous.

Now see here, I like Jason Statham just fine, but in an age where all Jason Statham films are created equal (that is to say, they are all the same movie), a new “paint job” goes a long way. Especially when you’re painting with colors not unlike those of Roger Deakins (of the visually stunning and gloriously beautiful Skyfall).

The trailer includes some pretty extraordinary and gripping scenes. The only downside, as noted by BadAssDigest, is that Hummingbird doesn’t have a U.S. release date. It opens in the UK on May 17, 2013.
