Redskins Need A Name Change, Says D.C. Mayor

WASHINGTON REDSKINS

Washington D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray gave the Washington Redskins an ultimatum today: If the team ever wants to relocate back into the city limits the Redskins have to consider a name change.

Gray said:

“I think that if they get serious with the team coming back to Washington, there’s no doubt there’s going to have to be a discussion about that … And of course the team is going to have to work with us around that issue. I think it has become a lightning rod, and I would be love to be able to sit down with the team … and see if a change should be made. There’s a precedent for this, and I think there needs to be a dispassionate discussion about this, and do the right thing.”

Gray said that several teams, including the Washington Bullets (now the Wizards) have change names that were deemed offensive or racist and that the Washington Redskins clearly falls into that category.

The Washington Post notes that the Washington Redskins have been criticized for decades about their racist name. Owner Daniel Snyder, however, has not shown any indications that a Redskins name change is in the works.

Do you think the Washington Redskins should change their name? What should be their new mascot?

The mayor will be out of office before the Skins change their name. As I life long Skins fan I would rather see us change our name to the Maryland Redskins instead of the Washington Whatevers and tell DC to shove it and piss off.

The mayor of D.C. should concentrate on cleaning up D.C. and controlling crime. Get a life Mayor Gray! You're the embarrassment.

With all the issues in the DC government, this is the one the mayor chooses to take up? Maybe he should be a little more concerned with the corruption scandals of his 2010 election campaign. Another red herring so people are talking about everything except what is important. Please get to work Mayor Gray on the things at hand for which you were elected.

Logo for the NFL Redskins comes from the famous Indian head Buffalo nickel of antiquity, just as does the Florida State Seminole logo. Buffalo Bills(AFL-NFL use the Buffalo logo from the same nickel. Minn. Viking logo is the Scandinavian version of the same Logo(Redskin-Seminole)

the image is one thing, the name is the problem, Redskins is offensive, I have native american blood and I don't like. They can keep the logo, but the name needs to go. They started in Boston as the Braves, I think that's the best name to go with, also Natives or Indians would be ok. But no Redskins. The Nazis made lamp shades out of Jewish skin, early americans crated native skin artifacts, sold body parts, female genitalia, created a whole industry out of tribal art, culture, graves, land, etc. THE NAME NEEDS TO BE CHANGED.

Wow, LeRoy. Calm down man. It may be their name now, but teams change their name all the time. The Tampa Bay Rays used to be the Devil Rays.

I am a Redskin and I am not offended by the word. I am sick of the 15 % shoving all the negative crap in our faces, that offends me, nearly 80% of these articles are negative.

How about a contest to come up with new name? Redstars , for instance, to keep red in the name. Mmost people call them "the ';skins," however, so maybe, superskins , (ok not potato skins). At least it might generate a list that Fans might go for.

A couple of mamby pambys want to change a name which is respected and denotes power and strength. OMG, when is the feminization of our leaders going to end? A couple of malcontent native Americans view it as insulting. How stupid. All of us have thought of the name as engendering fear in the opponent in a sport – not a war. The name Redskins is not an insult, and it's only the narrow little minds of extreme leftist that want everything to sound like it's an insult. The name speaks of pride. Stop the stupids.

A former Washingtoniaan, and a fan through the great teams coached by George Allen and Joe Gibbs into the presient, a die hard fan from Joplin, MO sings HAIL TO THE REDSKINS and tohell wit h the mayor and the councilman! The Redskins have always represented the City and doesn't need the contrived controversy here. This is Indian country about us here and I don't hear a cry and hue here where the Kansas City Chiefs are held in as high esteem as the Washington Redskins. Maybe the skins need to stay in Maryland.
