Nashville Mother Indicted For Trying To Smother 5-Month-Old Son While He Was Hospitalized

A Nashville mother has been indicted on multiple charges, included attempted murder and aggravated child abuse. Alexis Angelina Bagwell, 22, allegedly tried to smother her 5-month-old son while he was in the hospital for seizures. Unfortunately, the January 2016 incident was not the first time she had inflicted harm on her child. According to the report, at that same hospital three months earlier, the woman reportedly abused her baby when he was just two-months-old.

According to the official website for the city of Nashville, police spent months investigating Alexis Bagwell. After a grand jury had indicted the 22-year-old, she was arrested on July 17 at her Chapel Avenue residence. She is facing one felony count of attempted murder and three felony counts of aggravated child abuse.

The investigation began when Alexis’ son, Josiah, was a patient at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. In January 2016, he was admitted for reportedly having a “seizure issue.” On January 26 and January 27, medical personnel went to the child’s room for issues when he was alone with Bagwell. In one instance, the baby stopped breathing. The other time, the mother told nurses her child stopped breathing, but that turned out not to be true.

The staff at the hospital became suspicious, and Youth Services Detective Chris Bowden led an investigation. The detective determined that Alexis tried to unsuccessfully smother Josiah.

One of Bagwell’s charges stemmed from alleged child abuse when he was a patient at the same hospital in October 2015, when he was only two-months-old.

Josiah Bagwell is currently in foster care and is healthy.

According to World Psychiatry, the United States has the highest rate of mothers who murder their children. The abstract report states that the chances of a child being killed by a parent are highest in the first year of life. The article shows a trend in maternal infanticide, explaining that there is a predominance of murderous mothers who are unemployed and in their early 20s.

Alexis Bagwell is currently being held at Metro Detention Facility in Nashville on a $100,000 bond. On July 26, she will appear before Judge Steve Dozier. She has not posted bond, and it is not clear if she has an attorney yet.
