Best Netflix Movies: Eight Certified Fresh Crime-Dramas That Are A Must-Watch

If you are looking for the best movies to watch this weekend, and you enjoy crime-dramas, then Netflix has the answer for you. Based on the scores from the site Rotten Tomatoes, the Netflix movies listed below are all ranked as Certified Fresh. From modern classics like Rounders to recent titles like Spotlight, Netflix has plenty of high-quality crime-dramas for your viewing pleasure.

Rounders

While trying to maintain his relationship with his girlfriend and his responsibilities to law school, a reformed gambler returns to the game of poker to help his friend get out of debt with dangerous loan sharks.

Chances are, if you weren’t interested in the game of poker before viewing Rounders, you were after you saw the film. This 1998 classic is often attributed to the poker-boom that occurred throughout the late ’90s and early 2000s (to promote Rounders, Matt Damon and Edward Norton even played in the World Series of Poker). Directed by John Dahl, this is one of the newest movies on Netflix and it features a stellar cast: Matt Damon, Edward Norton, Famke Janssen, Gretchen Mol, John Turturro, Martin Landau, and John Malkovich.

Bronson

Starring Tom Hardy, Bronson is a biopic about Michael Gordon Peterson (often referred to as “Britain’s most notorious criminal”). Peterson was initially sentenced to seven years in prison for robbing a post office; because of his actions while in prison, he ended up serving several decades in solitary confinement. It was during this time that Michael Peterson transformed into his alter-ego, Charles Bronson. With comedic undertones and brutal imagery, Bronson is one of the most popular crime movies on Netflix.

No Country for Old Men

Trouble follows a hunter after he comes across a drug deal gone bad, and then takes off with $2 million in drug money.

Nominated for eight Academy Awards in 2008, and winning four (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Writing), No Country for Old Men is considered one of the Coen Brothers’ best movies. This thought-provoking film on Netflix has sent millions of viewers to the internet in search for answers to the meaning of the movie’s ending. No Country for Old Men offers standout performances from Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Woody Harrelson, Kelly Macdonald, and Javier Bardem (Best Supporting Actor).

Spotlight

Winning two Oscars (Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay), this was one of the most popular films of 2015. With a stunning score of 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, the site provides the premise for one of the best movies on Netflix.

“[This movie] tells the riveting true story of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Boston Globe investigation that would rock the city and cause a crisis in one of the world’s oldest and most trusted institutions. When the newspaper’s tenacious “Spotlight” team of reporters delves into allegations of abuse in the Catholic Church, their year-long investigation uncovers a decades-long cover-up at the highest levels of Boston’s religious, legal, and government establishment, touching off a wave of revelations around the world. Directed by Academy Award-nominee Tom McCarthy, SPOTLIGHT is a tense investigative dramatic-thriller, tracing the steps to one of the biggest cover-ups in modern times.”

Zodiac

Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, and Robert Downey Jr., Zodiac tells the true story of journalist Paul Avery (Downey Jr.) and detective Dave Toschi (Ruffalo); the duo dedicated their lives to the manhunt of America’s most infamous serial killer.

Trust

This disturbing drama from director David Schwimmer tells the story of Annie, a 14-year-old girl who is raped by a predator she meets online. This gripping movie streaming on Netflix features powerful performances from Liana Liberato, Catherine Keener, Clive Owen, and Viola Davis.

But with a missing wife, suspicious colleagues, and an expensive drug habit, his world starts to cave in. Will he be able to clean himself from the filth before his past catches up to him?

Filth has been described as perverse, warped, and splendidly unpleasant. It is one of the most popular independent movies from 2014, and this Netflix gem is considered a modern cult classic.

The Third Man

A pulp novelist investigates the death of his friend in postwar Vienna.

This classic 1949 film streaming on Netflix is often listed as one of the best movies of all time. It has received rave reviews for decades from both audiences and critics alike, and with a solid cast and brilliant writing, The Third Man continues to stand the test of time.
