Is Matt Damon joining George Clooney?

That is the rumor from Hollywood, as Damon could sign on for the adaptation of Robert M. Edsel’s non-fiction book about World War II, The Monuments Men, that George Clooney is set to direct. . The movie will see Matt Damon joining Clooney, as the actor is in talks with George to appear in the film.

The movie takes place in the closing day of the war, and documents a group of American and British art historians and museum curators as they attempt to recover art stolen by Nazis before it can be destroyed, the Christian Science Monitor noted.

Even before word that Damon was joining Clooney on the project, Monuments Men already boasted a star-studded cast that includes Daniel Craig, Bill Murray, and Cate Blanchett. As Christian Science Monitor writer Sandy Schaefer notes, the script from George Clooney and Grant Heslov is also very strong.

Monuments Men is a project that follows closely one from Damon‘s friend Ben Affleck. His recent movie Argo, which has gotten strong Oscar buzz, also deals with an international crisis. Critics think both movies could contend heavily for awards.

Damon and Clooney have enjoyed a close relationship in the past. Aside from the Ocean’s trilogy, the two stars also teamed up for Syriana, and outside of acting share several interests and causes.

Before Damon is joining Clooney on the project, he will hit the big screens for the Oscar-bait Promised Land, Deadline reported. The movie is from Good Will Hunting director Gus Van Sant and features Damon alongside co-star John Krasinski, who wrote the film together.
