Xbox 360’s September 23 update laying ground for Facebook, Twitter

Earlier today, Microsoft released a mandatory system update for the Xbox 360 over Xbox Live. This prompted all sorts of Internet gossip about what the juicy new update might contain. Personally, I was hoping for a feature that would allow me to reach through my screen and across the Atlantic to chin the next 13-year-old who teabags my corpse in Halo 3: ODST.

As it happens, that’s not there. Nor is anything of note, really.

Xbox 360 official mouthpiece Major Nelson took to his blog to explain that the update would result in no new features or changes … yet. Instead, it was simply preparation for new system features that will arrive later in 2009 – namely the integration of Facebook, Twitter, and Last.fm, which I blogged about here.

Today’s system update did seem to have one notable effect, mind – many users reported being unable to connect to Xbox Live, though the problem has since been fixed.

There’s still no exact date for when the Facebook/Twitter/Last.fm update will occur, with “Fall” being as specific as things get. Hey ho!
