Woman implanted with wrong embryo, must turn over baby

A couple who sought fertility treatment is facing a shocking inevitability due to a clinic mix-up.

Carolyn and Sean Savage have two children, but after Carolyn was diagnosed with a dangerous condition during her second child’s birth, they turned to fertility treatment to assist in adding to their family. The Savages were thrilled to learn that treatment was successful, and the couple found out they were expecting. Not long after the pregnancy was confirmed, the Savages received the heartbreaking news that the baby Carolyn was carrying was not theirs.

The Savages were given two choices- terminate the pregnancy, a decision at odds with their personal beliefs, or turn the child over to his or her biological parents. They chose the latter, and the couple spoke to Meredith Vieira on Today in hopes that no other family will have to endure a similar scenario:

“The hardest part is going to be the delivery,” Carolyn said. “I remember communicating with the mother of this childas to what I was envisioning and hoping for. I said, ‘We want a moment to say hello, and goodbye.’ ”

“It’ll be exceptionally difficult,” Sean admitted, even with the eight months they’ve had to prepare and the help they’ve received from mental health counseling. “But at the same time, we’ve been preparing this for months.”
