The Vampire Diaries fans are speculating that Nina Dobrev may have just accidentally confirmed that she’ll be heading back to The CW show one last time before the series takes its final bow next year.
The Vampire Diaries’ dedicated viewers flocked to social media to speculate that Dobrev may have confirmed her return during a recent interview, noting that Nina played coy and didn’t deny she was heading back to the vampire drama one last time when asked directly about her potentially returning.
Nina was asked head on if she was returning to The Vampire Diaries during an interview with former Fashion Police star George Kotsiopoulos at the 2016 American Music Awards, where fans noted that Dobrev had a pretty interesting response to the burning question everyone wants to know the answer to.
“That’s a good question. That’s a very, very good question,” Nina coyly replied with a pretty sly smile when asked if she’d be back on The Vampire Diaries one final time. “You should ask the producers. You should ask the powers that be above.”

But while Dobrev wasn’t giving too much away when asked about returning to The Vampire Diaries following the news that Season 8 would be the drama’s last, a number of the show’s dedicated fans took Nina’s seriously coy response as confirmation that she would, in fact, be back, pointing out that the actress did not deny her return on the red carpet.
“Nina practically confirmed her return in TVD, I’m shook! @julieplec make it official,” The Vampire Diaries fan @kisobrev tweeted out alongside the video, while @Luccyremy wrote on the social media site of Dobrev’s potential confirmation, “NINA DOBREV CONFIRMED HER RETURN TO TVD S8 YASSSSSSS #tvdforever.”
Nina’s potential confirmation comes amid months of speculation regarding whether or not Dobrev would bring back her fan-favorite character Elena one final time after leaving the drama in 2015.
The Vampire Diaries viewers have been speculating for months about whether or not Dobrev would be back, with producer Julie Plec most recently hinting that fans could actually be in a for a surprise if Dobrev does, in fact, return to the show one final time.
Plec hinted that Nina Dobrev would, in fact, be back to The Vampire Diaries one final time in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, where she teased that Dobrev could potentially return, but as Elena’s doppelganger Katherine.
As viewers saw in the recent episode “Coming Home Was a Mistake,” Georgie was killed and dragged to hell in a very similar way to how viewers saw Katherine go back in Season 5, which got a slew of fans assuming that the almost identical scenes were a sign that Katherine and Georgie could potentially both find their way back from hell before the drama ends in January.
When asked if the scene was a hint at Nina’s return as Katherine, Julie coyly told Entertainment Weekly, “I will confirm nothing, but the visual similarities are not accidental,” leading viewers to believe that Nina could soon be back as Katherine.
Julie’s latest confession about Dobrev’s potential The Vampire Diaries return as Katherine also came shortly after Plec admitted that Nina had previously promised to return to the show one final time after leaving the series last year.
Plec confessed that Dobrev had previously confirmed her return in July, telling TV Line after it was announced that Season 8 would be The Vampire Diaries last that Nina had promised to head back for at least one appearance in the final season.
“Not to put too much pressure on anything, but a promise was made,” Plec revealed when asked about Dobrev’s return, adding that Nina’s vow to resurrect her role one final time before the series takes its final bow was “an emotional promise that I’d like to see come to life.”
“There’s been friendship promises made,” The Vampire Diaries producer continued, “and now we’ll see if we can deliver on them.”
The Vampire Diaries Season 8 airs on The CW on Friday nights.
