Zayn Malik Announces Online Store On Snapchat

Zayn Malik has continued his recent non-musical pursuits by launching an online store, which he announced via Snapchat. As reported in Teen Vogue, on November 25th Zayn posted a link on his Snapchat to zaynmalikstore.com, a new business venture with plenty of Zayn-branded merchandise for sale.

The merchandise listed in Zayn’s store matches the singer’s aesthetic and public image very well. One of the items listed, a “Superfan Tattoo Set,” is a set of temporary tattoos that “are replicates of Zayn’s personal tattoos in design and dimensions.” The set includes temporary tattoos of a large tiger, a set of red lips exhaling smoke, a mandala design that Zayn has on his wrist, a small bird, and a checkered flag.

The Zayn Malik store also features more traditional merchandise, including t-shirts, tank tops, and hats that bear the singer’s name and image. Zayn also released jackets and shirts that say “Zayn” and his album title “Mind of Mine” in Arabic and Urdu, as a nod to his heritage.

Branching out into fashion with an online store makes sense as a business choice for Zayn. Malik is currently in a very public relationship with model Gigi Hadid, and the two of them have made headlines by walking the red carpets together and going to fashion shows. With Zayn having such a personal connection to the fashion industry, branching out into designing his own merchandise was a logical next step.

Zayn has been praised for his fashion choices by many outlets including the British branch of GQ, the men’s fashion magazine. The magazine named Zayn the winner of their Best-Dressed 2017 competition, calling him “one seriously stylish dresser [who] always at the cutting edge of menswear trends and is never afraid to experiment.”

As reported in MTV UK, Zayn beat out movie star Tom Hiddleston to win the award with 59 percent of the votes.

Zayn Malik’s store launch is one of many non-musical ventures that the former One Direction singer has embarked upon. Since leaving One Direction, Zayn has gotten involved with nearly every facet of the entertainment industry.

Earlier this month, Zayn released Zayn, an autobiography detailing his early life and his journey leaving One Direction to start a solo singing career. In excerpts from the book published by Cosmopolitan, Zayn revealed many of his personal struggles and discussed his public battle with anxiety, which has caused the singer to cancel all of his upcoming live performances.

Zayn writes about his anxiety in his book and attempts to rationalize it.

“The only way I can explain the anxiety I experience is that there’s a certain level of expectation I put on myself, and a certain level of expectation I feel from the fan base and the public. When I don’t do what I’m supposed to, it’s not because I’m disrespecting [people’s] investment in me, it’s because I respect what they’ve invested in me so highly I don’t want to let them down by giving them something that’s second rate and sh*t.”

Since Zayn has admitted that performing live can cause him anxiety and make him unable to perform, an online store is a way for him to continue to market his brand without risking a performance-ending anxiety attack.

Zayn also discussed his personal connection to fashion in excerpts from his autobiography published in MTV UK.

“I’ve always had a bit of individual style, even when I was a kid, for real. I hated school uniforms and all the rules, having to wear a tie and shirt. But when I sussed out that there were no rules regarding how we wore our school blazers, I would walk around the place with one arm in a sleeve, the other out, with my jacket dangling over one shoulder.”

The Snapchat launch of the Zayn Malik store could mean that the singer may be switching lanes to fashion.
