Texas Teacher Alexandria Vera, Who Had Ongoing Sexual Relationship With 13-Year-Old Student, Got Pregnant By Him, Faces Decades In Prison

Alexandria Vera, a Texas teacher who admitted to having a months-long sexual relationship with a 13-year-old boy and even got pregnant by him, faces a possible 30 years in prison, the Washington Post is reporting. Another sentencing option on the table involves her serving no prison time and even having her felony record expunged.

Authorities became suspicious of a possible sexual relationship between the teacher and an unidentified student at Stovall Middle School in Houston back in February, according to KPRC2 (Houston). The principal at the school where Vera worked received an anonymous tip about the relationship, and he called Child Protective Services. When CPS officials began asking around, Vera, who was pregnant with the boy’s child at the time, got spooked and terminated her pregnancy.

According to court documents, the two had met during summer school in 2015 and then developed a relationship from there. At first, they only communicated on social media. However, one day the student was absent from school; Vera went to pick him up, and then they drove around for a while and kissed in her car. Eventually, their relationship turned sexual.

Authorities say that over a period of several months, the two spent time together on a daily basis, having sex almost every day.

Even neighbors suspected there was something amiss; one neighbor said that there were multiple teenage boys coming and going from the teacher’s home.

“She was having a lot of kids in her home. There was drinking in the front. We always found beer bottles and beer cans on her side of the lawn and half of the (teens) did not look older than high school, maybe.”

Not only were his parents aware of the relationship, authorities say they actually accepted it and encouraged it. Vera would spend the night at the boy’s home; other nights, the boy would spend the night at Vera’s home, the parents driving him to and from. She was even introduced as the boy’s girlfriend at his home. When she broke the news to the boy’s family that she was pregnant with his son, the family was “very supportive and excited,” according to KHOU (Houston).

The relationship came to an end in June of this year, when Vera was arrested and charged with continuous sexual abuse of a child, which could have carried a penalty of life in prison. Last Wednesday, she pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child. Originally facing life in prison, Vera’s plea deal means the most she could face would be 30 years in prison.

However, she may not serve any prison time at all: another option on the table is what is known as “deferred adjudication.” If that happens, she will be placed on probation and be expected to meet certain requirements, which include no internet access, no contact with the victim (or any other children), and no trespassing at any schools. If she meets those requirements for a period of time, she will have no felony record and will have served no prison time, says her attorney, Ricardo Rodriguez.

“We’re very much hoping for deferred adjudication.”

Meanwhile, the now-14-year-old boy has been removed from his parents’ home and is currently in foster care.

Do you think Alexandria Vera, who pleaded guilty to having a continuous sexual relationship with a 13-year-old boy, should serve prison time?
