‘Outlander’ Season 3: Young Jamie, Dunsany Sisters Cast

Warning: This article may contain Outlander Season 3 spoilers.

The Outlander Season 3 cast keeps growing. According to the Daily Record, Scottish actor Conor McCarry (The Night Manager, Anna Karenina) has been cast as the adult Young Jamie. Young Jamie is not, of course, Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), but the oldest son on Jenny Fraser (Laura Donnelly) and Ian Murray (Steven Cree), who is named after his uncle Jamie and will inherit the Lallybroch estate.

Outlander Season 3 is based on Voyager, the third book of Diana Gabaldon’s wildly popular Outlander book series. The online newspaper notes that, in the book, Young Jamie and Young Ian have an adventure that has a long-term impact on the course of Young Ian’s life and the life of his family. As the Inquisitr previously noted, John Bell has been cast in the role of Young Ian for the upcoming season, so it appears likely series showrunner Ronald D. Moore and company are following the plot of the book.

Viewers met the child version of Young Jamie (Aaron Wright) when Jamie and Claire first visited Lallybroch. At that time, Jamie was angry the child had been named after him, thinking he was the son of his enemy Black Jack Randall. However, he later learned that the lad is the offspring of Ian.

In other Outlander Season 3 casting news, the roles of Dunsany sisters have been cast. According to Deadline, Hannah James (Mercy Street) will play the role of Geneva and Tanya Reynolds (Fanny Lye Deliver’d, Delicious) will play the role of Isobel.

The entertainment website describes Geneva, the eldest sister, as “beautiful” and “headstrong.” It also says she is “petulant, spoiled and demanding of servants at their home, Helwater.” Despite being accustomed to “getting exactly what she wants when she wants it,” Geneva is vulnerable, even naive, because of her sheltered upbringing. As for younger sister Isobel, she is “warm, friendly, and genuine.” She is apparently more plain in appearance than Geneva, but she is “inherently more likable and compassionate towards others.”

Outlander Season 3 will pick up right after Claire (Caitriona Balfe) travels through the stones to return to her life with her first husband, Frank (Tobias Menzies), in 1948. Pregnant and assuming Jamie has died in the doomed Battle of Culloden, she struggles to put her life back together in her original time period. Meanwhile, back in the 18th century, Jamie deals with the horrific aftermath of Culloden and the loss of Claire.

Outlander fans may be feeling impatient for the show’s return in 2017, but Moore explained to Variety that filming the third season of the epic Starz series is difficult and time-consuming.

“There’s an extended journey across the Atlantic and then the story eventually goes to Jamaica, the Caribbean and ending up in the New World. Season 3 will be as different to Season 2 as Season 2 was to Season 1. It’s exciting creatively; it’s very hard in terms of the production. You are doing a whole new series with every season. So that’s very difficult. Scouting new locations, building new sets, bringing in new cast members, new costumes, different eras. It increases the expense, it increases the time necessary to prep everything, to shoot everything.”

Moore also said he is mindful to bridge the gap between those who have read the books and those who have not.

“My job as the showrunner is to figure out how to service that audience and also bring in a new audience that has never read these books. And the show, week after week, has to function on both these levels.”

Diana Gabaldon is currently writing the ninth book in her Outlander series, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone. As the Inquisitr recently reported, she plans to end the series after the 10th book.
