Love Trumps Hate: Safety Pins And Letters of Love Sweep The Nation Post Trump Election

During the Elections 2016 campaign, one of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton’s campaign slogans was “Love Trumps Hate.” In the wake of an apparent election loss, a loss that has reportedly led to a rise in post-election hate crimes against minorities, women, Jewish communities, and Muslims, a new trend has taken the “Love Trumps Hate” slogan beyond the election to provide minorities a safe place, reports Vox News.

The trend is the trend of a little safety pin, saying a lot of words.

The safety pin represents a safe place for anyone feeling hate in a post-election world that includes President-elect Donald Trump. Additionally, Americans are getting creative, and opening their hearts to all people, as letters of love and walls of love sweep the Internet from teachers, children, and every day Americans.

In this post-election world, many Americans are still saying, “Love Trumps Hate.”

The Inquisitr previously reported on some of the apparent rise in hate crimes today, noting that Muslim women wearing hijabs have been physically assaulted, among many more alleged hate crimes. Vox News reports that a school in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is investigating white supremacist graffiti scrawled on their rise.

Wellesley College is Hillary Clinton’s alma mater, and reportedly had two Trump supporters escorted from campus for harassing students. Muslim women at the San Diego State University have reportedly experienced alleged hate crimes, and reports of pro-Nazi or anti-Semitic graffiti are increasing all across America today in a Trump election world.

The “Love Trumps Hate” mantra is still sweeping the nation, and indeed, the world. Love Trumps Hate protests occurred in New York City and California today, and also in Berlin, Germany.

As Vox News reports, the alleged hate crimes are attacks by Americans against Americans. In addition to the “Love Trumps Hate” protests, the Internet has come back against these crimes with a simple symbol to send a message to minorities and disenfranchised groups to say, “You are safe.” The symbol?

A safety pin. They were even being given away for free at Green City Market in Chicago, Illinois, today.

Vox News reports it was a symbol that was launched after Brexit, when many Brits and immigrants were attacked in very similar ways in the wake of the Brexit decision earlier this year. The National Police Chiefs’ Council reported a 57 percent rise in hate crimes in Britain after Brexit. Then Prime Minister David Cameron addressed the public to say the Brexit vote was not an open call to commit xenophobic hate crimes.

In America’s post-election world, the alleged hate crimes are xenophobic, anti-semitic, racist, and anti-woman. Donald Trump has said nothing in the wake of the alleged hate crimes that have been committed in his name, by people wearing his name on their shirts, and by people proudly talking about how he is already, making America great again.

It was after the Brexit vote and after the rise of these hate crimes that Britain found the power of the safety pins reports Vox News. It was a way of showing solidarity and, more importantly, safety, to those suffering or even fearful that hate crimes might happen to them.

Britain was not the first to introduce the safety pin to its country. It was a trend spawned in 2014 says Vox News, in Australia when the #IllRideWithYou hashtag began. This occurred when, after a Sydney terror attack, Muslims were feeling threatened on the bus, and fellow citizens began wearing safety pins along with the hashtag #IllRideWIthYou.

Along with the #safetypins and #safetypin hashtags is the hashtag #safetypinsolidarity.. Even a former Marine, a group that was thought to support Donald Trump, tweeted a safety pin. But, safety pins are just one token of love being spread across social media in the wake of the election this week.

Americans that are feeling fearful are being met with love by teachers all across the country, and by fellow citizens alike with letters of love, walls of love, and many shows of support in the rise of alleged hate crimes.

One letter of love reads “I am in a safe place.” It says, “If you wear a hijab, I’ll sit with you on the train. If you’re trans, I’ll go to the bathroom with you…If you’re LGBTQ, I won’t let anybody tell you you’re broken. If you need a hug, I’ve got an infinite supply.”

Shaun King, senior justice writer at New York Magazine posted a “Love Wall” that children at a South High School in Denver, Colorado, made.

At least two teachers have left letters on their doors for students across America as well. There have been two spotted on Twitter, but there may be many more as teachers do what they can to send the message to their diverse students that they are loved. One teacher wrote,

“Dear undocumented, you are loved. Dear black students, you are loved. Dear Muslim students, you are loved. Dear Mexican students, you are loved. Dear female students, Men WILL respect you, demand it, you are loved. Dear LGBTQ, you are perfect, you are loved.”

Another teacher did the same, telling her students, “You are not terrorists, men cannot grab you, you have equal rights, you will not be mocked, you are safe and respected here, your life matters, I know you are not rapists or drug dealers, in this classroom, there are no walls.”

Donald Trump has not addressed the hate crimes, or, the safety pins. But he may become the most controversial President to date with protests in the street across the world protesting his presidency even still today, and hate crimes seemingly on the rise.

Despite the controversy surrounding the new President-elect, the legacy of Hillary Clinton appears to be carrying on. Hillary Clinton supporters are still inspired by her slogan of “Love Trumps Hate” and are doing everything they can to make sure that, indeed, her legacy of love trumps hate, lives on in America for all citizens, for long after the election.
