Jun Ji Hyun And Cha Tae Hyun Reunite Through ‘The Legend Of The Blue Sea’ — The Couple From ‘My Sassy Girl’ Together Again On Upcoming SBS K-Drama [Video]

K-drama fans, both locally in South Korea and internationally around the world, are looking forward to the upcoming Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS) K-drama, The Legend of the Blue Sea. Starring Lee Min Ho and Jun Ji Hyun, the series is inspired by a classic legend back in the Joseon Dynasty from Korea’s first collection of unofficial historical tales. Said legend is about a fisherman who captures and releases a mermaid.

In The Legend of the Blue Sea, the Joseon legend is further extended into a romance. Joseon noble family member, Kim Dam Lim (Min Ho), is the son of a magistrate. He meets Shim Chung (Ji Hyun), a mermaid and the two share a relationship. However, Shim Chung somehow is transported to modern day Seoul. Now living in the 21st century, Shim Chung has to adjust to human life though it is a troublesome endeavor. However, things get interesting when she meets Heo Joon Jae, a cold-blooded con man who uses his good looks and wit to transform into different people to conduct scams. It is by happenstance Joon Jae looks like Dam Lim.

It is safe to say the primary romance for The Legend of the Blue Sea will be between the characters played by Lee Min Ho and Jun Ji Hyun. However, the primary romance from a past K-movie will make its reemergence in the K-drama. Cha Tae Hyun will make a cameo appearance in The Legend of the Blue Sea in which he will be alongside Ji Hyun. This marks the return of the “couple” from popular 2001 K-movie My Sassy Girl, 15 years later.

The news of Jun Ji Hyun and Chae Tae Hyun reuniting for a cameo on the set of The Legend of the Blue Sea was made known by SBS producers, according to AllKpop. They announced that Tae Hyun recently finished filming for his cameo appearance which in turn marks the first time in 15 years both Ji Hyun and Tae Hyun will be together on screen. At this moment, we do not know how Tae Hyun will make his appearance or which episode he will appear in. However, getting to see the original couple from the popular K-movie My Sassy Girl on screen again is an opportunity seasoned Hallyu fans will not miss.

For those who never got to see the K-movie My Sassy Girl, it is one of the best Korean comedies out there and is a must-see for Hallyu fans. To put things into perspective, it is the highest-grossing Korean comedy of all time. When it was released throughout East Asia, it became a mega blockbuster hit in Japan, China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. It was also very popular in many parts of Southeast and South Asia too. Without really spoiling the movie, it is a romcom that tells the love story of Gyeon Woo, an engineering student, and “The Girl” and how they grow in love for each other.

My Sassy Girl was popular enough to be remade into an American, Japanese, Bollywood, Chinese, and Tollywood film too. There is also an upcoming K-drama series and a sequel titled My New Sassy Girl in which Cha Tae Hyun’s character Gyun Woo can’t get over “The Girl” and ends up reuniting with his childhood sweetheart who is named Sassy who is played by Victoria Song of K-pop girl group f(x) who is currently starring in fantasy C-drama Ice Fantasy.
