Chicken Spill Shuts Down Pennsylvania Highway

Why did the chicken cross the road?

It didn’t, but Salon reports that 37,000 pounds of processed chicken spilled out of a wrecked tractor trailer yesterday on US Route 422 in Pennsylvania shutting down eastbound lanes in Lawrence County.

Times Online reports that while traffic is moving again and the roads are clear of processed poultry, state police in New Castle report the crash occurred before 5 a.m. As a result of the wreck, which caused the massive chicken spill, the highway was shut down for more than three hours.

Not much has been released about the crash. The driver of the truck has not been identified, nor was it reported whether or not the driver was hurt. The cause of the crash was also not released. The owner of the truck, and consequently the owner of the more than 17 tons of processed chicken spilled all over the road.

The crash took place near McConnells Mill State Park, which is located about 35 miles north of Pittsburgh.

Oddly enough, a similar event transpired in England this week, when more than 1,000 frozen chicken spilled onto the M5 motorway near Bristol. That chicken spill, the Belfast Telegraph reports, was caused by the wreck of a delivery van. The driver was taken to a hospital, but the injuries did not appear life-threatening.

The M5 was only shut down for a short time and no other chicken-related road closures appear to have been reported world wide.

Police in either case have not said whether fowl foul play was suspected.
