Philadelphia Eagles Should Trade For Chiefs’ RB Jamaal Charles

The Philadelphia Eagles are one of the bigger surprises in the NFC this season and appear to have a shot at making the NFL playoffs. If they want to make that leap, they will need to make an upgrade ahead of the NFL trade deadline on November 1.

Carson Wentz has been playing at Rookie of the Year level so far this season, but could use more support. Ryan Mathews hasn’t been getting the job done at the running back position and Darren Sproles cannot handle a workhorse workload. That means that the Eagles should consider making a trade for a running back.

There is one player in particular that the Eagles should consider targeting. Jamaal Charles could be available, and the Eagles should place a call to the Kansas City Chiefs to see if they can get a deal done.

The Inscriber Magazine mentioned that the Chiefs could be open to the idea of trading Charles.

Charles has played in two games so far this season after coming off of a torn ACL. He has carried the football 11 times for 40 yards and a touchdown in limited action. Kansas City likely doesn’t view him as a big piece of their future, especially as he’s set to enter the final season of his contract next year.

At 29-years-old, Charles has seen his career derailed by injuries on multiple occasions. That shouldn’t scare the Eagles away from pursuing him in trade talks, assuming the price tag is reasonable.

Adding a threat like Charles in the backfield would be a huge step in the right direction for the Eagles’ backfield. Charles may not be the superstar that he once was, but he still has plenty of football left in the tank. Now that he is back at full health, there are plenty of reasons to believe that he could get back to being an every down running back.

Not only could Charles make an impact on the ground game, he could also be a dangerous target for Wentz out of the backfield. Similar to what the Eagles had with LeSean McCoy a few years back, Charles is the type of player that a coaching staff will try to get in the open field any way possible.

It would certainly make things more interesting in the NFC East if the Eagles were to go out and acquire a piece like Charles. Dallas is obviously the front-runner to win the division at 5-1, but the Eagles are currently 3-2 and their offense would take a big leap forward. There is a chance that they could come back to win the division, but simply settling for a playoff appearance would be fine with Philadelphia.

Needless to say, the Eagles are not the only team that could look at acquiring Charles. There are a few around the league that could use an upgrade at the running back position.

Philadelphia shouldn’t overpay to bring Charles in. There is still concern about his health and whether or not he can get back to his full ability following his second ACL tear. Charles certainly believes he can, but the Eagles cannot afford to overpay and end up being wrong about him.

Doug Pederson needs more weapons in order to make the Eagles a serious contender. Wentz is producing much sooner than Eagles’ management would have thought, but they can’t afford to sit around and wait to bring in more talent around him. Bringing that talent in now and competing with their rookie quarterback is the right move to make.

Expect to hear plenty of rumors come out with Charles’ name attached to them in the coming days ahead of the NFL trade deadline. Philadelphia should be one of them and Charles would likely be more than happy with a fresh start with the Eagles.
