Fans can watch the Nigeria vs. Zambia football match live online and see which team can get the road to the 2018 World Cup started with a victory.

The teams will meet Sunday in Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, Zambia. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Zambia time (1:30 p.m. Nigeria time/8:30 a.m. ET). It will be the opening match of World Cup qualifying for both Group B rivals.

Fans who watch the Nigeria vs. Zambia football match live online will see if the Super Eagles can tune out the many distractions of the past few weeks and focus on taking the first step toward World Cup qualifying. In the weeks before the match, there were reports that the Nigeria Football Federation didn’t have enough money to fly the team to Ndola for Sunday’s game.

The NFF initially blasted the report, the Daily Trust noted. Spokesperson Ademola Okajire called the reports “baseless, misleading and despicable, not only against Nigerian football, but against the Nigerian nation.”

As the Daily Trust report added, the incident was part of a larger controversy surrounding the NFF.

“The NFF noted that over the past few months, some persons have made it their business to fabricate unhealthy stories about the NFF and Nigerian football. It called on all stakeholders to disregard, henceforth, any report about the NFF that did not emanate from the NFF Communications Department.

“While admitting financial challenges as a result of the current state of the economy, the NFF expressed solid faith that matters would never get to the point of Nigeria being unable to get its National Team to the venue of a competitive match or championship.”

And the problems with the NFF and president Amaju Pinnick popped up again this week, with the team struggling to pay for a chartered flight and the team’s European-based players asked to buy their own plane tickets, the Guardian reported.

The circumstances have many close to the team worried.

“We’ve never had it so bad in our football and now we’ve completely become a laughing stock in international football,” said former professional player Jonathan Akpoborie.

“They call us giant of African football only on paper and our administrators must accept the flaws and the path they’ve taken the game. It’s nothing personal but this present NFF board has failed the country, our incredible fans and those who gave everything as coaches, players and hardworking staff,” Akpoborie added.

Fans who watch the Nigeria vs. Zambia football match live online may see a Super Eagles team ready to break out. Though Nigeria is stocked with firepower — including Ahmed Musa, Victor Moses, Moses Simon, Odion Ighalo, and Brown Ideye — they have struggled on offense in the last two years. Since the 2014 World Cup, the Super Eagles have scored just 12 goals in 12 matches, ESPNFC noted.

With such strong and deep talent, many experts believe it’s only a matter of time before Nigeria finds its scoring touch. And Nigeria will also have the fortune of starting their World Cup qualifying journey against a team equally as struggling. Zambia has played 18 international contests since the last World Cup, netting just 17 goals including only two contests in which they were able to score more than one goal.

The match could also be a chance for Nigeria to continue its stretch of recent international success. While the Super Eagles have struggled a bit, the Under 23 Dream Team made a dream run at the Rio Olympics, taking the bronze medal and becoming the first African nation to win each of the three Olympic medals.
