Britney Spears Vs. Lady Gaga: The Battle For The Super Bowl LI Halftime Show

Are Britney Spears and Lady Gaga battling it out for the coveted Super Bowl LI halftime slot?

According to reports, while Lady Gaga’s name appears to be the front-runner to perform at Super Bowl 51, sources are claiming that she’s facing stiff competition from Britney Spears.

New speculation is claiming that Spears is allegedly one of the artists in the running for the big halftime performance slot, and could potentially battle it out with Lady Gaga to land the prestigious gig when the Super Bowl hits Houston, Texas, on February 5 2017.

Despite recent reports alleging that Gaga has the halftime show on lockdown, a Popjustice contributor who goes by the username Goldsoundz is now claiming that Spears could be putting up some stiff competition for Super Bowl 51.

According to a screen shot of remarks made by the user and uploaded to Twitter by @TheGloryBritney, the contributor claimed that Spears’ team are currently in negations for Britney to make an appearance at a “huge event,” thought to be the upcoming Super Bowl.

“I’m trying to keep quiet, but Britney and [her] team are in the middle of a big negotiation for a huge event,” the source claimed, before appearing to suggest the “huge event” in question is Super Bowl 51 by claiming that Spears “has competition” from other artists.

“[Britney] has competition,” he continued, potentially alluding to Lady Gaga, “but she deserves the gig.”

The rumor sent Britney’s fans into meltdown on social media, as Twitter users began to speculate that the cryptic message suggested that Spears is very much in the running to perform the halftime show at next year’s Super Bowl.

“Apparently Britney’s team are in negotiations for a HUGE EVENT, it better be the super bowl,” Spears fan @GodneyIsBritney speculated, while @britneyo9 added, “Britney and her team are in the middle of a big negotiation for a HUGE EVENT! What is it could be? (…Super Bowl?).”

Britney Spears, her team and the Super Bowl committee are yet to comment on the most recent rounds of speculation, though the Spears rumors notably started up again just days after Us Weekly claimed that Lady Gaga had officially been confirmed as the Super Bowl 51 halftime performer, only for the NFL to quickly dispute the report.

While the site claimed that Gaga’s involvement was a done deal, according to Vulture, the NFL’s senior vice-president of communications Natalie Ravitz then denied the report on social media just days before Spears’ name was once again thrown into the mix.

“.@usweekly ignored my on record response,” she tweeted, before clarifying that the NFL are actually in talks with numerous artists for the prestigious Super Bowl halftime show, potentially including Spears, who last appeared at the event back in 2001 alongside *NYSNC and Aerosmith.

“We’ve had conversations [with] several fantastic artists about Super Bowl Halftime Show,” Natalie continued, adding that the organization is yet to make a final decision.

But while Britney and Lady Gaga continue to stay tight-lipped amid the latest round of reports, Spears has spoken out about performing at the Super Bowl in recent weeks, most recently admitting during an interview with BBC Radio 1 that she would take on the big show, only not alone.

“Yes. I would probably do that,” Spears replied when asked if she’d be open to the idea of being the Super Bowl 51 halftime performer, though Britney admitted that she’d prefer to have someone else by her side to take on the daunting task with.

“I would have to have a little support group, another artist of course,” Britney said. “I don’t think you would ever do the Super Bowl alone. That would be kind of scary.”
