Brad Pitt And Angelina Jolie: Divorce For The Sake Of The Children?

Could Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have divorced, because Angelina Jolie feels the children will be better off without Pitt in the house? While many couples stay together for the sake of the children, how is it that apparently Angelina Jolie has decided the children would be better off without the benefit of a two parent household?

Angelina’s legal representation issued a statement explaining the situation to the public. The statement was quoted in Us Weekly.

“Angelina Jolie Pitt has filed for dissolution of the marriage. This decision was made for the health of the family. She will not be commenting at this time, and asks that the family be given their privacy during this difficult time.”

Will Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie divorce for the sake of the children after 12 years together? How can dissolving the family unit be healthy for the family? It all seems very different and opposite of common thought, but a source told Us Weekly that there was an incident that led Angelina to believe she had to act immediately.

“She still says Brad is the love of her life, and the decision has weighed heavy on her heart. Her priority now is the children.”

Allegedly, Brad Pitt and 15-year-old Maddox Pitt got into an argument while the entire family was riding on a private plane. A source told New York Daily News that it was merely a verbal argument, and Pitt did not strike his teenaged son at all but did yell at the boy. The statement is quoted in the Telegraph.

“He was never physically abusive to her or the kids. He did yell at one of their children on the plane during an argument, but he didn’t hit the child. Brad is denying claims of inappropriate behavior.”

So Angelina Jolie allegedly believes that her children would be better off without their father Brad Pitt based on one isolated incident? That hardly seems likely. Sources revealed the couple had been fighting, not physically, though, just arguing a lot. According to US Weekly, there are rumors Jolie has complained about alcohol abuse, marijuana, and anger issues. None of this is confirmed.

Brad Pitt was caught on video yelling and apparently drunk, immediately after the alleged plane incident occurred according to Us Weekly. He was not piloting the plane though or anything like that. Plus it’s always been said that Brad was the stricter parent, but according to credible sources, including Angelina, Brad has never been physically abusive.

Does Angelina Jolie’s decision to divorce Brad Pitt for the sake of the children even make sense? There is some disagreement among child psychologists, but many studies show that divorce can cause lasting trauma to children. One of the most extensive and thorough studies ever conducted on the topic proved that divorce was significantly damaging. The often cited Wallerstein study followed children of divorced parents from the 1970s through 1990.

“The devastation children feel at divorce is similar to the way they feel when a parent dies suddenly, for each experience disrupts close family relationships. Each weakens the protection of the family; each begins with an acute crisis followed by disequilibrium that may last several years or longer; and each introduces a chain of long-lasting changes that are not predictable at the outset. But divorce may well be a more difficult tragedy for the child to master psychologically. Loss due to death is final….”

Only Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie really know what is going on in their marriage, and their family alone knows the entire story. It is not for anyone outside the situation to determine if they are making the right choice. There are circumstances where divorce is necessary to protect children from physical danger, but unless there is something absolutely devastating that the public is not aware of, divorce for the sake of the children hardly makes sense, at least not based on one of the most extensive studies ever done on the subject.

The study also emphasizes that guilt and placing blame is a major part of the child’s reaction to divorce. Children and adolescents often blame themselves for the divorce and that is traumatic, so actually making it apparent that the divorce was due to an argument between a teen and his father could be especially damaging. Even if that is part of her reasoning it seems unwise to say so. And Divorce can impact a child long term, while an argument is usually soon forgotten.

“After ten years and sometimes fifteen years, among the children of divorce, strong emotions still persist.”

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s divorce for the sake of the children seems to defy logic, at least based on all witnesses and source accounts. While having too much to drink and yelling at the kids once, or even occasionally might not be ideal, it hardly outweighs the benefits of the father’s overall presence in the home.

Is Angelina Jolie divorcing Brad Pitt for some other reason? Is there some other factor in the equation that no one outside the situation is aware of? While it is impossible for anyone else to know what Angelina is dealing with, her actions could be seen as rather hasty and impulsive considering what is at stake for their six children.
