‘Blair Witch’ After-Credits Scene: Find Out If There’s A Secret Hidden At The End Of The Horror Sequel

Moviegoers who trek out to see Blair Witch will want to know if there’s an after-credits scene, the extra bit tucked at the very end of the movie that might pay tribute to the fright-filled ending of the original 1999 movie.

The latest sequel in a summer filled with remakes and re-purposed films, Blair Witch has already built up plenty of hype and anticipation as a suspenseful bookend to the summer movie season. But whether the movie also has an after-credits scene has been closely guarded as early reviews came out.

The after-credits scene has gone from a seldom-used movie feature to something of an expectation within certain genres. Action movies very often have this end-credits scene, which comes after all the credits have finished rolling and most people have already left the theater. In the superhero genre it’s more of an expectation, with the Marvel movies including not one but two scenes that play before the final credits have finished rolling.

So, does Blair Witch have an after-credits scene? The answer appears to be no, but it may actually have something even more interesting.

The website Media Stinger, which keeps track of which movies have after-credits scene, noted that Blair Witch has nothing either during or after the credits. So while the movie won’t adhere to the increasingly popular end-credits element, it instead introduce what could one day become a different standard for cinema.

The first Blair Witch Project was famous for using the internet, then still just growing in popularity, to draw in moviegoers. It included some disguised marketing that built up word of mouth for the small movie that hit it big, introducing what would later become a standard in viral marketing.

And while the latest Blair Witch doesn’t have an end-credits scene, what it does have is a virtual reality trailer. As The Wrap noted, Lionsgate introduced a first-of-its-kind trailer that can be interactive for viewers.

“The 90-second ‘experience’ is available now on the Sisters VR app, which you can download on your phone for use via Google Cardboard or the Samsun Gear VR headset. The VR trailer comes out of a joint venture between Lionsgate, new ad tech company Vertebrae and production house Otherworld Interactive, which created the Sisters app.”

There could be a big audience going to see Blair Witch in its opening weekend, which is expected to top the box office.

The movie has a big endorsement from Heather Donahue, one of the stars of the original film who gave the 2016 sequel a big boost. As Entertainment Weekly noted, she wrote a note on Facebook saying the newest film is actually better than the original.

“Scare for scare, the new Blair Witch is better than the original. You heard me. You nailed it and Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett! Big, big congratulations!”

Donahue also has a bit of an issue with the original movie, which she unveiled in an article in The Guardian.

“The company that originally bought The Blair Witch Project was purchased by Lionsgate and they’re the ones behind this new sequel. They asked what they could do to show me how much they appreciated my work in the original. They made sure my last name wasn’t used anywhere. In their press materials, their protagonist goes in search of his ‘sister’ but they don’t use my name. For all the talk of Hollywood being populated with jerks and sharks, these guys were actually being considerate and were genuinely concerned that this would not be any more disruptive to my life than was inevitable.”

So while there’s not an after-credits scene to reward Blair Witch viewers, they can use the extra time to drive home and check out the virtual reality trailer instead.
