Freelance Writing: 4 Reasons To Give Freelancing A Try

So you want to try your hand at freelance writing? Well, why not? Forbes reports that about one-third of American workers take on freelance positions. As times change and technology advances, freelance jobs are becoming more common.

Writing is one of the most prominent methods of freelancing these days. You might be thinking you need a special degree or loads of experience. You’re wrong! Anyone can be a freelance writer. It doesn’t matter what your age is or your background; there’s an opportunity for you.

First, we’ll talk about some reasons you should be a paid writer. Then you’ll get put on to some great sources for new freelancers.

Reason 1: Work From Anywhere

This is probably the major selling point for life as a freelance writer. You do have some companies that prefer in-house, on-site writers. However, some clients and agencies deal primarily with remote workers. That means you’ll be submitting work from home or wherever you choose to write.

If you want to type on your laptop while still snuggly in bed, you can do that. Want to work as you sip coffee your favorite cafe? A freelance writing career lets you do that. Anywhere that you can feel comfortable and not be distracted is instantly your own office.

Reason 2: Learn New Things

Freelance writing means being in a constant state of research. Whether you’re doing quick research for trending news stories or detailed research for white paper projects, you’ll always be learning. If you’re someone who enjoys learning new facts and ways of seeing the world, consider freelance writing.

Not only do you get to expand your pool of knowledge, you then get to create content showing the world what you’ve learned.

Reason 3: The Feeling Of Independence

There is nothing like being able to earn money when you want from wherever you want. You get to share your unique voice while not having someone breathing right down your neck. That sense of freedom is sometimes intoxicating. Some people in a traditional job setting may mock freelancers, but I have also seen those envious looks from “the other side of the fence.”

It can be tough as a freelance writer, and you may face hectic schedules and demanding clients. There is a sense of pride in knowing that you’re completely supporting yourself — and others — with your writing.

Reason 4: You Are A Better Writer Than You Think

Here’s a prevalent myth about writing: You are either born a William Shakespeare clone or you can’t string two words together. The truth is actually somewhere in the middle. There are some people who do have natural writing talent. Yet, with time and experience, anyone can become a published freelance writer. What’s missing is the willingness to try.

If you would like to start freelance writing, it’s best to look for resources that can teach you what you need to know. You should then practice a bit until you can craft a few starting writing samples. After that, head off in search of a freelance opportunity.

You may not only discover how much you love writing, but you may also learn in time just how much you underestimated yourself.

So, I’ve given you the reasons to consider working as a freelance writer. You’re probably thinking, “That sounds great and all, but how do I get started?” Well, here are a list of must-read articles to help you get started.

Starting a Freelance Writing Career with No Experience

I also recommend reading these books when you get the chance.

When you’re ready to become a freelance writer, you’ll want to create a Contently portfolio, where you can upload your writing samples. When you do start publishing, you’ll want to update your online portfolio with fresh examples of your work.

You should also create a LinkedIn account for professional networking or finding new writing jobs. I’d also recommend you have at least one social media account. This is not just important for growing your audience; many websites ask that writers have some form of social media presence.

Remember: Nothing beats a failure but a try. If you are interested in becoming a freelance writer, make the effort. You could find you have a memorable writing voice that people will love.
