Mel Gibson Slams ‘Batman V Superman’, Attacks Other Superhero Movies Too

Mel Gibson has launched a scathing attack on the superhero genre, specifically criticising Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and insisting that it was a waste of an awful lot of money.

Gibson was talking to Deadline to promote the premiere of his latest film Hacksaw Ridge at the Venice Film Festival when the discussion turned to the current state of the movie business, especially the recent summer slate of films.

After being asked whether or not films that cost $200 million plus actually need to be that expensive, Gibson responded, “I don’t believe so. I look at them and scratch my head. I’m really baffled by it. I think there’s a lost of waste, but maybe if I did one of those things with the green screens I’d find out different. I don’t know. Maybe they do cost that much. I don’t know. It seems to me that you could do it for less.”

Gibson then added, “If you’re spending outrageous amounts of money, $180 million or more, I don’t know how you make it back after the tax man gets you, and after you give half to the exhibitors. What did they spend on Batman V Superman that they’re admitting to? And it’s a piece of s***.”

Hacksaw Ridge tells the true story of Desmond T. Doss, a U.S. Army medic that enrolled during the height of World War II but didn’t bear arms because he was a Seventh-day Adventist conscientious objector. Over the course of the Second World War, he single-handedly saved the lives of 75 comrades during the Battle Of Okinawa as he leapt into action.

During the same interview, Gibson joked about the differences between Desmond Doss and the likes of Batman and Superman, while then teasing about why the likes of Captain America: Civil War and Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice cost so much more money.

Gibson added, “Do you know what the difference between real superheroes and comic book superheroes is? Real superheroes didn’t wear spandex. So I don’t know. Spandex must cost a lot.”

Gibson isn’t the first legendary actor to have a pop at Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice in the last few weeks. Margot Kidder, who portrayed Lois Lane in the original 1978 Superman film opposite Christopher Reeve, recently criticized the portrayal of Lois Lane in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, but rather than blaming Amy Adams she insisted that the character was poorly written.

“They took one of the best American actresses’ around, Amy Adams, and didn’t give her anything to do! I mean, how stupid is that? They made her what used to be the girlfriend, which kind of ended in the 60s with women’s rights,” she remarked to Hey U Guys.

In fact, Stan Lee, the Marvel icon who created the likes of The Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Spider-Man, also chimed in with an insult of his own towards the DCEU over the weekend. During his appearance at Fan Expo Canada Lee was asked, “How do you think DC can make a hit with critics?” to which, according to Comic Book, he responded, “Let me write it.”

At the same event, Lee had another dig at Warner Bros.’ DC Extended Universe by adding, via Cinemablend, “I want to do more cameos also, I’ve even let people know it doesn’t have to be a Marvel movie, I don’t know why DC hasn’t called me. They could use me!”
