‘Gears Of War 4’ PAX West Appearance Includes Horde 3.0 And Arms Race Reveals

The Coalition is ready to share more details about Gears of War 4‘s Horde 3.0. The Xbox One and Windows 10 PC shooter doesn’t quite get that information yet as the developer is promoting its debut at PAX West this weekend, but fans do get a brief tease of gameplay.

The co-op Horde 3.0 will make its first appearance for Gears of War 4 during PAX West with multiple live streams going throughout the weekend for those that are unable to attend the annual convention. The action will be streamed via the official Gears of War Twitch channel Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

On Friday, September 2nd, tune in to see the world debut of a brand new Versus Multiplayer mode in Gears of War 4 – Arms Race,” The Coalition announced on its website. “What’s Arms Race? Well, that would spoil the fun now, wouldn’t it? This special event is ‘For The Watch’, a running gag between Penny Arcade‘s Gabe and Tycho where they battle it out for the honor of taking home the fabled watch.

“Then on Saturday, prepare for an overload of Horde 3.0 gameplay in a very special race to be First to 50!” the announcement continued. “We’ve got three squads, including two captained by GoldGlove and FemSteph, competing for the honor of being the first team to survive 50 brutal waves of the all-new Horde mode for Gears of War 4. This isn’t an event you’ll want to miss, and fans in attendance will also receive an exclusive, limited edition Horde 3.0 Poster designed by Tony Moore (known for his award-winning artistry in The Walking Dead comic series).”

Those that are able to make it PAX will have the chance to go hands on with Gears of War 4 and Horde 3.0. The Coalition is offering 30 minutes of play time in the co-op mode with four squad mates to try and beat 10 waves of enemies in their booth and in the PAX Arena.

Those that can complete all 10 waves of Horde 3.0 in the allotted 30 minutes in The Coalition’s booth will receive Physical Gear Packs, which unlock in-game Gears of War 4 content. Meanwhile, PAX Arena winners will tackle the co-op mode on Hardcore difficulty with a chance to win “special Gears of War merchandise.”

PC gamers will receive some love at PAX too. The Nvidia and Alienware booths will both feature Gears of War 4 on Windows 10 running at 4K resolution.

IGN was able to get a quick teaser snippet of Horde 3.0 gameplay and went ahead and analyzed the footage. The video confirms both the Swarm and the DeeBees will be opponents to face for Gears of War 4 players, but it is not clear if the two enemy factions will be working together or will also be aggressive to one another.

The most interesting aspect of the Horde 3.0 teaser is the players lugging around a crate. It is labeled “Level 2” and players have to set it down in an approved area of the map. Opening the crate spawns a weapon that the player can pick up and then place down.

This particular Gears of War 4 weapon appears to be an anti-DeeBee weapon that fires an electric discharge, possibly an EMP. Some lightning bolt icons can be seen on the map in the same scene as the weapon. It’s not clear if this is some sort of power requirement for the weapon, repair items, or something else being added to the game.

Gears of War 4 is due out October 11 for the Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs. The title is part of Microsoft’s new Play Anywhere program where a digital purchase from the Xbox Store and Windows Store comes with a copy of Gears of War 4 for both platforms. It also supports cross-saves and cross-play between platforms for The Coalition’s title.

The Xbox Play Anywhere initiative went live in a recent console update and the Windows 10 Anniversary update. ReCore will be the first title out on September 13, followed by Forza Horizon 3 on September 27, and then Gears of War 4.
