MTV VMAs 2016: Will Justin Bieber Make A Surprise Appearance To Perform Hit Song Sorry?

It’s a weekend pop music fans love–the MTV VMAs are less than 48 hours away, and this year’s award ceremony will feature a few highly-anticipated performances.

Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award recipient Rihanna is opening the show, Britney Spears is performing on the VMAs stage for the first time in 10 years, and Ariana Grande is teaming up with Nicki Minaj to perform “Side to Side”.

Other performances include Alessia Cara, Troye Sivan, and Nick Jonas. Most, if not all, performers are also nominated at the VMAs this year.

The pop star everyone loves to hate, Justin Bieber, is up for several awards, all revolving around his hit song “Sorry” and its music video. One of those nominations includes the MTV VMAs 2016 Video of the Year, where he’s up against tough contenders like Adele, Beyonce, and his good friend Drake.

All that being said, will Justin Bieber make a surprise appearance at the VMAs in NYC?

The singer hasn’t mentioned whether or not he’ll be attending, and his fanbase seems to think there’s a 50/50 chance.

He made an epic comeback on the MTV VMAs stage last summer, ending his “What Do You Mean?” performance in tears. He later admitted that he was nervous about the audience’s reception to him after his chaotic break from music, and his emotions got the better of him.

“It was just so overwhelming for me,” he told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show. “I missed some cues, so I was a little disappointed at that. And just the support. I just wasn’t expecting them to support me in the way they did. Last time I was at an award show, I was booed.”

It’s unclear what changed after the VMAs last year, but they don’t appear to interest him anymore.

Bieber posted a message to his Instagram after the Billboard Music Awards in May, as Rolling Stone reported, making it clear that the Canadian native is tired of being surrounded by the fake atmosphere at award shows.

“I don’t know about these award shows. No disrespect to anybody at any of the shows or the people running it. Nothing but love for you guys and your support. But I don’t feel good when I’m there nor after… A lot of people in the audience there [seem to be] worried about how much camera time they will get or who they can network with… These award shows seem so hollow.”

Since his official return to the charts as a feature on Jack U’s “Where Are U Now” early last year, Bieber has made it clear he’s never stopped being a force to be reckoned with.

Singles from his album Purpose have been breaking records left and right since its November release, and his recent collaborations with Major Lazer (“Cold Water”) and DJ Snake (“Let Me Love You”).

With that in mind, are the MTV VMAs 2016 even on Justin Bieber’s agenda this weekend?

He’s been spotted out and about in Los Angeles with his friend-but-maybe-more Sofia Richie, and the two appear to be living the life on a romantic getaway in an undisclosed location, as Hollywood Life reports. The 18-year-old daughter of singer Lionel Richie has been documenting the excursion on Snapchat for the world to see, in case there was any doubt.

If Justin Bieber does head to New York for the VMAs, it’s probably expected that he’ll perform his newest hits. I’m predicting “Cold Water,” “Let Me Love You,” “Company,” and “Sorry,” since it’s nominated for awards.

The question is: Can the VMAs still be a party without him?
